A Southern California city council candidate was fired from her day job and is receiving death threats after she posted a video in which she told a woman that it was very disrespectful to have a Mexican flag on her front lawn.

Tressy Capps, a political activist from California’s Inland Empire, filmed a video on her smartphone of her approaching a homeowner about the Mexican flag fluttering in front of her home. She asked the woman to take it down.

Hi. Is that a Mexican flag in your front yard?” Capps asks the homeowner, who is inside her home. You know we live in America right? This is the United States. So, why are you flying a Mexican flag in your front yard?

Capps goes on to say the she finds the Mexican flag “disrespectful.

Capps, who is running for a local city council spot in Fontana, Calif., posted the video online and it quickly went viral.

When her former employer Coldwell Banker got wind of the video, the banking giant promptly let Capps go from her position with the company.

"We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind," David Siroty of Coldwell Banker Real Estate said in a statement. "We hold our affiliated companies to high ethical standards. Each of our franchised companies is independently owned and operated and we fully support the local owner's decision to disassociate this independent agent from the brokerage firm and, by extension, our franchise system."

Capps, in her video, also suggests that the family could face fines and legal problems for flying the Mexican flag, but the Ontario, California City Attorney John Brown disputed that claim.

"The City of Ontario takes great pride in being one of the most ethnically and racially diverse cities in Southern California,” Brown said. “Those expressions of ethnic and racial diversity take many forms throughout our City, and the City has always taken the position that such speech is absolutely protected by the both the United States and California Constitutions."

In an interview with Fox News, Capps said she can’t believe one video she posted is causing such outrage.

My family is being threatened, I’m being threatened. We may have to move. I don’t know – I'm really scared,” she said.

Capps, who said it was not a campaign stunt, has since said she regrets uploading the video onto YouTube and said it was in bad judgment.

The homeowner with the Mexican flag on her lawn, Maria Banuelos, told a local Spanish-language news network that she didn’t think that the flag, which she says she has flown for 13 years, was bothering anyone. Her husband, Siefrado, told Fox News that while Capps has since apologized, the family does not believe she is being sincere.

We dont feel like she’s saying it from the heart. She’s just saying it from the mouth,” he said.

In a Facebook post, Capps said she should not live in fear because of speaking her mind.

[T]aking a position on an issue does not make me evil, racist or unethical if I disagree with your position, she said. My life is being threatened and the business I built for 30 years has suffered over a flag video. My son is being bullied at school now and for that I am devastated.

Capps said all she was trying to do was to educate with my video about flag etiquette. Clearly, she said, I did a very poor job communicating that.

If you want to fly another country’s flag you do it in the proper way. The American flag flies on top; it has a place of prominence and then the other countrys flag is underneath, she said. It's just flag etiquette.

But it's ok for La Raza and the illegals to burn our flag (which is a crime). You want to fly another countries flag, go back to that damn country.

If I were her, I would teach my kid the best way to deal with those bullies........ Approach the biggest one, catch him off guard and aim for the bridge of the nose as and swing hard as you can and keep swinging after that.

So, freedom of speech for thee (flying the U.S. flag), but no freedom of speech for me (flying the Mexican flag)?

as usual, there were some details omitted.
in the interview she forgot to mention the family in question also has the American flag in their yard. she forgot to mention that while she was approaching this family on their own property, questioning their freedom of speech, she also told them at least 4 times to leave the country.

this woman is the one who was bullying a family on their own property.

she recorded herself in an act of disrespect, discrimination and harassment. she posted her video on the internet in an effort to either gain attention or support for her ignorant ideas. it happens that it was her own actions that backfired and landed her in a world of trouble.

That wouldn't be freedom of speech, that would be freedom of expression. If they like their country so god damn much they should go back there. Hell, they are probably illegal's anyway.

If they are illegal I'd tell them to leave also. It's not like I haven't before or when I'm in a store or at a restaurant and you hear them speaking another language (which is god damn rude), I usually stop and remind them where we are at and what language we speak here.

Really? So you go around asking for a valid Green Card when you hear others speaking in different languages and if they cannot produce one then you have the right to tell them which language they must speak, although our own constitution does not require them to do so? Or maybe you determine their legality in being here as what they look like? Which is it LPDon? Do you have credentials proving you have the authority to tell others to leave this country or are you self appointed? How do you determine whether someone is "illegal" to reside in the U.S.?

As for rudeness, it is my opinion that cursing is rude also but that doesn't give me the right to tell others not to do so in public or in private. If I don't like certain aspects of what I consider "rude", I can solve that problem by just walking away from the conversation which I consider rude!

the original topic is about an ignorant woman disrespecting, and harassing people on their own property. among the comments she made she did tell people of immigrant background to leave the country.
you are saying you would tell us to leave if you were to hear us speaking a different language. I am proud of my culture and heritage.
what makes you think you have more rights than I do if we are both American citizens? if you came up to a group that included my cousin's great grandfather, my brother and me and challenged our right to be here, does ignorance give you the right to disrespect decorated veterans, natural born citizens and naturalized citizens?
that's exactly what you would be doing by telling any of us to go back.
if it bothers you to hear another language. learn the language or leave the immediate vicinity.

If they aren't talking to you, then it doesn't matter what language that they speak.

A display of xenophobia isn't pretty.

Go back long enough and I'm sure the native American Indians may think the same about you.

Many immigrants to the US are defensive about their identity because culture values are important to them...This is as it should be Don...In the United States we have immigration laws, one of which is a requirement to learn English...The purpose of this law is to help insure a safe and successful transition to their new country...The US not only welcomes immigrants, we encourage immigration...Census Reports tell us there are over 40 million immigrants living here and 337 languages being spoken...What this means is standardization is necessary, but what it also means is America is about diversity...English is the national language, however no official language exists at Federal level...Twenty-eight out of fifty states have established English as their official language and Hawaii has established English and Hawaiian as theirs...For employment opportunities and safety, education and requirements of daily living it is necessary for immigrants to learn English, but the language they choose to speak at home and in public is entirely their choice and should be respected....

She has a permanent resident card. Her Dad got citizenship paper 50 years ago. He's never spoken English.

The HS kids who haven't learned English by HS are taught in Spanish. The schools admit it's not right. They are under federal and state pressure to get them through.

I have one in the 11th grade that speakie no English.

People in many states don't have a clue. In most of Ca., much of Oregon, Wa. State, Fl., NC, Minnesota, NYC, if you don't speak Spanish, you can figure not being able to work in the public sector.

Far as I'm concerned, private businesses can choose to hire only bilingual, or, their own language. I went to eat in China town, LA. They spoke only Chinese. Had to order by picture.

Government should be no place where (other than English) is catered to. Folks don't want to learn, let the interpreter fee come out of their pocket.

Did I say I would go around asking for green cards? No, I said if I know they are Illegal I would tell them to get the hell out. Learn how to read. I don't care if I have the authority or not. I have the right under the Constitution of the United States of America to speak my mind when and where I want and yes I have the MORAL authority because I am not a god damn criminal like they are. ILLEGAL IS ILLEGAL.

I have the right to say whatever the hell I want. If I am walking in the store I don't want hear that gibberish. It is down right F'ing rude, plain and simple. If I were to move to another country I would adapt to their culture, not expect them to adapt to mine. This Liberal PC mentality has got to go.

Cool, they can practice their culture in their own homes. I have no problem with people coming to this country LEGALLY. Do you realize the billions of dollars were wasting having to print every F'ing thing in English and Spanish (you would think the Libbo environmentalists would be going nuts over that also but I guess it's ok to kill trees and create green house gasses under certain circumstances. I am tired of calling the bank or customer service or any business for that fact and hearing a message for English Press 1 for Spanish Press 2.
