Being lonely and being alone are totally sepreate issues. You can be amongst a crowd of good friends and still feel all alone. You can be dating someone and still feel alone. If the chemistry isn't there, then you are just passing time. So in the mean time, we go thru our days, laughing when we can, might even keep dating the wrong preson just to kill time. I see nothing wrong with this as long as both parties understand they are just friends, otherwise someone can get hurt.
I was in this situation in my single life, I was dating someone, there was just no chemistry. I wrote this song that describes it perfectly.
