In reference to the question in the title... Not sure. I do believe citizens would be quite baffled if they actually knew how much they pay in taxes.

Fed income tax
State income tax
Social security tax
Medicare tax
FICA
Vehicle registrations
Property tax
Gasoline tax
sales/excise taxes
Inflation (yes this is actually a tax)
Tolls
Random fees/permits

Many people live paycheck to paycheck to basically live, have a car, cable, cell phone, and internet. So, in essence these people are working to have the new "basics" of life. These people are NOT getting ahead but merely existing to work. Are they not just MODERN DAY slaves?

One thing that should never be taxed is food, yet they still have a tax for it.

some would like them to be,, thats why they have to continue fighting for humane treatment and options and not be brainwashed into thinking they are only worth what others say they are,,,,

not really, for instance, to have a car it is the law to have insurance,, welfare isnt paying for that, welfare doesnt put gas in the tank,

and, unless one is ok with having their kids live in some of the most crime ridden. unsafe, slums,,, few of the other bills they pay for shelter are gonna be covered by welfare either,,,

living paycheck to paycheck is hard, but nothng like living from welfare check to welfare check,, there is much more freedom in the former if it is a 'decent' wage,,,

whats to be baffled about really?

federal government takes manpower and resources for which money is needed

state government takes manpower and resources for which money is needed

social security pays money out for which money must be taken in

medicare pays money out for which money must be taken in

documenting and tracking vehicles and owners and their legality takes manpower and resources for which money must be taken in

for most things, they arent truly 'free' to produce or deliver and so there are expenses charged to cover the coss,,,

Taxes should be lowered to help all get ahead. Taxes are needed for sure. Notice that taxes are never rescinded? They never go away.

Agreed. A government is necessary to provide basic services, infrastructure, order, and help the weak.

Economies of Scale should dictate that with increased size(population), costs as a percentage should go down. However, government is increasing at a higher percentage then many factors(population is one) and as a result taxes are increasing while services are decreasing.

The federal government and many of the state governments are near bankruptcy but are spending money now based on inflated, non-realistic, future revenues. The money is not being spent wisely either.

All this means taxes will be going up. So, at what point do you give up working?

Cars = Only needed, for the most part, in order to work.
Insurances = Only needed if you have equity in something. Hospitals will always take care of you in an emergency.
Food = Depending on locations, but most large cities have enough free food for anybody that asks for it. Plus the government will give you money for food.
Shelter = This can be a difficult one.

Many people are working just to exist and pay taxes. Don't people want more? It is a quality of life issue.

But, it doesn't say that a government is empowered. A government is necessary to provide basic services, infrastructure, order, and help the weak.

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
At which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts
Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.
Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ***.

Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers;
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.
Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words
Upon his tomb,
Taxes drove me
to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax.

"STILL THINK THIS IS FUNNY?

Not one of these taxes existed 100 years ago, and our nation was the most prosperous in the world. We had absolutely no national debt, had the largest
middle class in the world, and Mom stayed home to raise the kids."

Strongman and the Lemon!
Strongman puts on a Show, squeezes a Lemon dry, then calls on anyone in the Audience to get three more drops of Juice out of the Lemon!
Prize would be 500$!
That little Man comes up on Stage, takes the Lemon, and squeezes another half Cup out of it!
Strongman grudgingly pays those 500$ over, but wants to know how that pintsized Man achieved it!
Little Man says,"Well,I work for the IRS,I am a Tax-Collector by Profession"!

So,you see, there is always something left for the Taxcollector!

"I would rather be exposed to the inconveniences attending too much liberty than those attending too small a degree of it." -- Thomas Jefferson

"Government is actually the worst failure of civilized man. There has never been a really good one, and even those that are most tolerable are arbitrary, criminal, grasping, and unintelligent." -- H. L. Mencken

Written on the side of the Internal Revenue Service building in Washington, DC, is the phrase “Taxes are what we pay for a civilized society.” These words have been used for decades to justify the forcible confiscation of wealth, but the sentiment behind the phrase is, of course, much older.

Far from producing civilization, the reality of taxation is something much different. Taxation makes society less efficient, less stable, and poorer, while providing the state with the ability to wage wars, imprison millions of citizens for petty non-violent offenses, and regulate every aspect of the taxpayers’ lives.

As Murray Rothbard pointed out, taxation is the worst method of looting us. Inflation, for example, is destructive, of course, and it might make a loaf of bread cost $10. But at least you get a loaf of bread. With taxation, you get nothing.
