Topic: Is vanity a vice?

According to Descartes, vices are diseases of the mind.

The reason I ask is because I think I might be a little vain. I also detect vanity in others as well and it's very unpleasant. Jesus said we should not judge others before judging ourselves but like Schopenhauer said... our eyes are for looking outwards, not inwards.

I think it's unpleasant because when a person is vain they appear to be dominated by it. It's as if they're no longer in possession of themselves; they seek approval and nothing more. It's a horrible way to live, even if one is capable of gaining admiration from others. Because how often do we see celebrities praised one minute and slated the next.

Vanity and pride are different things, though the words are often used synonymously. A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves; vanity, to what we would have others think of us.

Jane Austen

So first we have to clarify, are we talking about vanity or pride. I think we all struggle with the our pride becoming vanity. There is nothing wrong with pride, in fact it is healthy, as long as it doesn't become vanity. To take pride in one's accomplishments is good, performing accomplishments just for praise or justification from others is wrong.

Vanity is as ill at ease under indifference as tenderness is under a love which it cannot return.

George Elliot

Vanity is all about what I can gain from others, whereas pride is how I feel about myself.

Well, this is something that I've thought a bit about because it's easy to get all big headed about it when women tell you that you're good looking and then wonder why you aren't getting more tail. What I try to do is to be modest about everything else and balance my vanity about being a sex god with a little self mockery.

Seriously, my mate is the most vain individual,
I am the complete opposite.
I do not think either of us is 'diseased.'

What is, is.

Benjamin Franklin mentions vanity is the first few pages of his Auto-biography

And lastly (I may as well confess it, since my denial of it will be believed by nobody), perhaps I shall a good deal gratify my own vanity [by writing this]. Indeed, I scarce ever heard or saw the introductory words, "Without vanity I may say," but some vain thing immediately followed. Most people dislike vanity in others, whatever share they have of it themselves; but I give it fair quarter wherever I meet with it, being persuaded that it is often productive of good to the possessor, and to others that are within his sphere of action; and therefore, in many cases, it would not be altogether absurd if a man were to thank God for his vanity among the other comforts of his life.
-Benjamin Franklin

It an interesting look to say the least.
