Topic: Hang up and walk! | |
---|---|
I read a recent report that I knew would eventually be made.
Texting while walking accounts for more injuries per mile than distracted driving, according to a professor of emergency medicine who says he's treating a skyrocketing number of pedestrian injury cases.
"Pedestrian injuries are particularly dangerous because there's no protective area surrounding you when you're hit by a car," says Dietrich Jehle, professor of emergency medicine at the University of Buffalo... ...Less serious injuries from texting while walking often include walking into walls, falling down stairs, and tripping over items strewn on the floor... ...An Ohio State University study found the number of pedestrian injuries involving cellphones tripled between 2004 and 2010, while the total number of pedestrian injuries dropped. Jehle says the numbers likely understate the problem, as patients tend to underreport information about behaviors they find embarassing. More and more I find myself irritated whenever I have to go to a store, because I encounter more and more people who are too busy talking on cell phones to pay attention to what they are doing and where they are walking. Once while waiting in a line to pay for my groceries, I was behind a woman who was talking on her cell phone while she attempted to swipe her bank card through a card reader. Because she was distracted by her call, she she kept swiping her card the wrong way. Finally she handed her bank card to the cashier. I don't know how cell phones are being used outside the USA, but in the USA, it seems as if some people are obsessed with talking, and thus, they use their cell phones non-stop. Has anyone else ever wanted to yell at someone, "Hang up and Walk!"? |

just pay attention in general
I have experienced workers on land lines while waiting for service I have experienced people in conversation (without a phone) instead of moving the line along,, people don't seem trained to focus as much as they once were, multitasking has made a lot of people who can do a lot of things at once poorly instead of focusing on doing one thing right and well,,, |

Technology is great, but theres a time and place for it, not the store, especially not getting on the freeway, I don't want to walk around you when your blocking me so you can talk, dont want to hear what they have to say, and I don't want to air my private conversation either, most annoying of them all have your order ready dont wait till your ordering your food to call your family to read off the menu and take orders.
I know your talking about safety but I couldn't resist a vent. |

I honestly don't know what these people have to talk about ALL DAY LONG! And the conversations are devoid of any meaningful content. Are they just so boring that they need constant environmental stimuli to entertain themselves? Can they not have periods of reflective thought? And after cussing me for having the audacity to avoid being killed by them as they drive unaware down the street they'll put some jesus picture with a "if you love me you will repost this in five minutes" crap on facebook.
I once watched a couple enter a restaurant, each texting on their phones. They were seated, were served, ate and left, texting all the while. They never spoke a word to each other the 45 minutes they were there. They didn't even speak to the server, just pointed out their choice on the menu to the waitress. What kind of relationship is that? People used to tell me, "I tried to text you but you didn't answer" and I would reply that it was because I wasn't home. They would give me a blank stare and say, "but you have a cell phone" and I would respond, "yes I do. I wasn't home but my cell phone was". I am a throwback to the days when you left home and your telephone stayed tethered to the wall. You are right - PUT DOWN THE PHONE AND WALK!!! |

Could that be because you are a man? I'm outta here. |

It's a bit convoluted to suggest...but technically what you can do is lawfully resist an unlawful arrest by the perpetrator of the phone call.
Whenever your public causeway is specifically impeded by a person, it is legally an arrest. The legal term means literally, your physical freedom is being arrested by an individual. It is the basis of by-laws like placing obstacles on public paths being illegal. What this means is, shoving your way past the person impeding you no longer becomes misdemeanor assault, but becomes resisting an unlawful arrest. |

Could that be because you are a man? I'm outta here. Interesting OP though! People on cell phones can indeed be very irritating, on the other hand side it is handy to be able to phone (when necessary). For instance when in Ikea and you can't decide whether the pink vase is better than the blue one and you have to ask your partner what he thinks. It even seems normal these days to visit someone and to be on your phone half the time, sending Whatsapps and texts. I got a friend like that, she constantly receives messages and she replies to them as well. I think it's extremely rude to have conversations interrupted all the time by replying over and over. Plus, and that might be the worst, when do you as an individual have 'down time' when you're always on stand-bye for the whole world? I don't want to be available all the time, and I ain't. I don't reply to calls, texts, Whatsapp whenever, wherever. People even check their social media on their phones when they're in a pub. So they go out to have fun and socialize, yet they have to check their social media sites? It's a bit of a weird world sometimes. |

Holy Hell, I could go on a seething rant about this. But I will control the urge.
I love the video, where a person walking in a mall, texting, falls into a fountain. That video says it all. I doubt very much that person learnt anything from the experience. When I leave the house I carry a simple flip phone for emergencies only. If I am with someone, and they can't leave their phone alone, I just walk away. Simple. An obsession with anything is unhealthy. Society as a whole, is suffering from ADHD. |

I have a cell phone but if I talk on it in a public place it is briefly....to let someone know that I am on my way, for example and even then I usually wait till I get back to my car.
It is a matter of courtesy, safety, and consideration...no one wants to listen to you talking on the phone. Things that are supposed to be private are still supposed to be private..like your phone conversations. So please use as private an area as possible - even out in the store lobby is usually fine. As far as driving, I think a brief urgent conversation is ok if you are not in traffic. If someone else can see from their car that you are on the phone than you probably shouldn't be.... not that I am perfect, but these are kinda the goals I set for myself. even so I have done these things, but there are usually mitigating circumstances when I have |

I could go on and on about this as well. I think it shows disrespect for the person you are with if you cannot put the thing down. Walking aways is a good thing. I watched a video clip just today and it showed a man getting hit by a car. Both the man walking and the person driving were on their phones. |

David you are so right. Two stories just from last week, a womans car broke down on the side of the road, as she was walking she wandered into the actual freeway so engrossed in her conversation the car in front of me hit the brakes and swerved to miss her I almost rear ended him not missing a beat she moved to the shoulder and just kept talking.Second a guy came into the resort sat at the bar and was talking so loud about a drug deal he was setting up that the employee alerted security and when his dealer showed up they were both arrested.
