Do you want them on your roads?

It may mean cheaper freight which might possibly mean lower prices. More likely the middle men will make a slightly better margin and you won't save anything.

There are safety issues.

There are worker displacement issues. If you give our trucker's jobs to Mexican truckers, what will our truckers do for work. What will happen if you cut their pay significantly by bringing in Mexican Labor to do the driving.

Is this a Republican vs Democrat issue? I think a lot of Republicans oppose this move and a lot of Democrats too. I expect only a few people support it.

Anyone know what is driving this issue suddenly?

the same happen when u put call centers for software support in India.
It has been done, and it will as long as greed runs this country and the world.
I support your point of view, employments that are already in a country should not be taken and put them out just because is cheapest.
Government suppose to consider their people and not their pocket

I gotta come down hard on Bush with this one. Maybe the first real evidence you have seen that I disagree with one of his policies, but there are many, you just don't know about them. They need to leave the trucking industry alone. Those guys have it tough enough already.

I think it also stops a step in the border process as well, letting the trucks pass the border without having the cargo shifted to another truck. This eliminates the rather informal step inspection performed by the American truckers in the process.

I spent 30 years in the Trucking Industry in Safety and Management. My biggest concern is the safety issue. I have seen some of their trucks and they do not meet the safety standards set by the U.S. There has never been a requirement to unload trucks at the border and reload them as far as I know except for the random custom inspection. I have trucked quite a bit out of Mexico. We used to have a Mexican Carrier pick up our trailers at the border, take then in and load them then return them to us at the border.

I spent some time in a logistics and trucker dispatching job, and we never had a problem with the foreign truckers, hell they were usually earlier than anyone else! Even the foreign women drivers, small women at that, got the job done. Don't blame it on Bush, he doesn't run the trucking companies, blame the owners of these companies and their customers, the corporations who are trying to save a buck.

One of the most powerful groups to ever appear in world history is the middle class in America....the middle class got its power initially from the labor movement early in the 20th century thru unions thus strengthening their rights to earn a wage and move themselves up in the social ladder...thru this, the middle class could wield there own power economically & politically...to the power elite..the middle class has to vanish....the desire here is to have a 2 tier social structure...wealthy & poor....killing the trucking industry is yet another way to erode the foundation stone of the middle class....say goodbye america...we are losing by allowing this in the name of corporate enterprize...

"For more than a century, ideological extremists at either end of the political spectrum have seized upon well publicized incidents to attack the Rockefeller family for the inordinate influence they claim we wield over the American political & economic institutions. Some even believe we are part of a secret cabal working against the best interests of the United States, characterizing my family and me as “internationalists” and of conspiring with others around the world to build a more inegrated global political and economic structure--one world , if you will. If that’s the charge, I stand guilty, and I am proud of it."

One of the things that plague the trucking industry is a shortage of drivers. Every company I ever worked for was in a continual hiring mode to try to meet the demand for more drivers. Look at the proliferation of "Truck Driving Schools", now almost every Vo-Tech School has one still the damand for drivers cannot be met. There is an old addage in the trucking industry "if you got it a truck brought it" which is completely true.

Everything in this country moves by truck and much of it moves across the borders, both Canadian and Mexican. To stop this commerce would be devestating to our economy. Think of the things we get, produce from Mexico, lumber and agricultural products from Canada, to name a few. Like it or not, we live in an age of a globalized economy and nothing we can do will change that.

My only concerns the mechanical condition of the Mexican trucks and that drivers from another country comply with all the regulations that govern drivers from this country. Further, our trucks should have the same access to their country that is granted to them and this currently does not happen either with Mexico or Canada.

Gypsy, No way was this meant as a racist thread. half of Houston is Mexican and I mostly like all of them I have met. As far as I'm concerned they are welcome to be here. I've shown that in other posts I've made.

This is more of a protectionist post. Maybe it is a little anti-capitalist.

I have safety concerns as well. But mainly I don't want to see the truckers hurt with competition that they can not stand up to. I'm not always for the lowest price on things. I have workers on a project right now that I could outsource instead. If I outsourced I could save thousands of dollars, but this way I protect my workers from layoff and I know they will be around when I need them.

Truck drivers deserve our support too.

gardenforge you always put a smile on my face!flowerforyou I also agree that the safety issues with these trucks is and should be a big ticket concern. Additionally i am wondering just how many ILLEGALS are being smuggled right along with that freight.
