Why is the fish symbol considered by many a pagan symbol?
I thought it represents Christianity. Fisher of men. I don't look at it
as an idol...hmmmmm....

It is a Christian symbol mostly used by Born Again Christians it shows
up in most not all Christian teaching.

I don't remember if it's used in the bible

Would need to do some research

I haven't been to Church for years but I do know this one. LOL
The fish symbol comes from Rome, it was illigal to be a Christian and
they were persecuted. The local Christians had to have symbols or their
faith so they could recognize each other. The fish was one of the main
ones, I think because Jesus was a fisherman.

"I think because Jesus was a fisherman."

I thought he was a carpenter?

Unless you are refering to him as a fisherman of men.

I wonder if he would have been on the TV series of This Old House? LOL

One version is supposedly representative of Darwinism. The one used by
Christians has, according to my research, been because he was alledgedly
able to multiply fish and loaves iof bread to feed the poor and hungry.
There is biblical reference but not being Christian I cannot recall the
exact biblical scripture on it. Hope that answers it for you.

I believe the word you've each been struggling to find is Ichthys. The
ichthys came about in in the early Roman Empire (not to be confused with
the Holy Roman Empire), and was used as sort of a Christian symbol to
indicate that a meeting, congregation, et cetera was being held. This
was when Rome was still using Roman gods and so the Christians sought to
protect themselves. It may be confused with paganism because pagans
worship nature and using the fish as a symbol may have been confused
with worshipping actual fish, as though they were devine.

first of all.. paganism is not devil worshpping--- i dunno if that was a
joke or not--- if it was.. it wasn't funny..

the fish was used much earlier than christianity it has symbolic
representation for many of the stories like say aphrodite.. tigrata (
sp) and some others.. it was representation for reincarnation and in
some languages it literally meant womb, hence it took on the
symbolicness of the woman and the womb the ability for reincarnation
from births it also was a key symbol for like fertility with venus.. it
has so many meanings it would be impossible to say, it also since it was
recognized by pagans and other orders, it stood as a symbol for their
communities, say they were having a meeting or something and they didn't
want to draw attention to it you can simply draw the fish, just like
say today there are flags for the BDSM or leather societies andt hey are
placed sometimes above bars and if you didn't know what they meant you
probably wouldnt' even recognize them, the fish served this purpose for
the pagan community as well...

of course like many symbols that represented the mother goddess
christianity either adapts it or makes it evil, like the pitch fork in
paganism, the witches hat, the pentagram, etc... like wise with holidays
like easter and the combination of the holiday with goddess ester which
is why there are bunnies and eggs to symbolize fertility, or christmas
is celebrited on the wrong days it isn't when jesus is born at all, but
it was placed there to be in with the pagan holidays.. so.. yeah

Ichthys means fish. It was used to represent the mother Goddess. Early
Christians adapted it into an acronym representing their faith.

I is the first letter of the word Iesous (Ιησους), Greek for Jesus.
CH are the first letters (in Greek one letter) of the word Christos
(Χριστóς), Greek for Christ.
TH are the first letters (in Greek one letter) of the word THeou (Θεοῦ),
genetive case of Θεóς, Greek for God.
Y is the first letter for Yios (Υἱός), Greek for Son.
S is the first letter for Soter (Σωτήρ), Greek for Savior.

During the early Church, Christians were persecuted violently. So they
used an appearantly pagan image to hide the fact that the place was a
meeting place for Christians.

the fish symbol first appears in Sumerian symbols...
long before the bible...
Those who came from heaven and started that civilization
first landed in the sea...

It was also used by many Free Masons, for the same reason it was used in
early Christian times. Free Masons were a persecuted group and had to
meet in secret, in fact they had a whole secret society. Many of
America's founding fathers were Free Masons.

I think that it was orgianally meant to be a symbol.
From jesus teachings to be a fisher of men.

I'm not sure how far back the tradition was used before Christianity .
. . but I do know it was used especially during the time of Nero to
secretly meet and identify other Christians. It was used to designate
meeting places or in conversation one person would casually draw an arc
in the sand with their foot. The other would complete the fish and
quick erase it.
