An old friend called.
Said he was having suicidal urges.
That's not like him.
He explains his head swims, his heart races and gets the urge to die.

I am at a loss for advice for him.

Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, but this seems like some sort of bad/odd joke to post a question like that on here.

If anybody makes a plea for help of such gravity, you should direct them IMMEDIATELY to Accident & Emergency / ER. From there, they can be assessed, made safe and subsequently helped.

He is reaching out for you.He needs to seek help from someone that can help him Now.
If you are in the same town,Go talk to him in person.Otherwise.Call family or friends that can go to him.
It may be a Medical reasons that are causing him to feel and think this way!

Yeah, serratonin in his brain is dangerously low and it is seeming to him like life is hopeless. He needs to visit his doctor.

If its any help, my experience with suicidal people has always been that the ones who tell people they are suicidal are the ones crying out for help. The people that actually do it usualy give no hint of what they are about to do.

Still cant take any risks though

This will seem counterintuitive but you need to find out how serious this is by asking him if he has a plan. His answer will tell you much about what you should/could do. If he has a detailed, concrete plan, "I'm going to blow my head off.", next questions... "Do you have the gun? Are you thinking of using it now?" If yes, contact emergency services immediately and send help. Keep him talking to you until they arrive. Don't think you're going to give him ideas by asking questions. There's a huge difference between having suicidal urges and actually planning it out and getting what you need to accomlish the task and calling someone just before you do it. If this is the case, he needs more help than you can offer and professionals should be contacted immediately.

However, if he's just feeling sometimes like he wants to die, this isn't as serious of an issue. Yes, he still needs help but it's not imminent and he's looking for support and advice from a friend. You can tell him that suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. You should get him to seek help from a psychologist or psychiatrist ASAP, explain that he's not alone and help is available to find out what's wrong, that the only real weakness is not admitting when you need help. Remind him how much you value his friendship and of the people in his life that love him and would be devastated if he took his life. Most importantly, be there to listen to him about why he's feeling so bad and encourage him to get help, tell him to contact you immediately if he ever finds himself sitting there with gun in hand.

You're a good friend if he trusts you enough to share these feelings with you. Suicide is a hard topic to discuss...scares the bejesus out of people...and rightly so. Good luck to both of you.

Ok!
Got high calmed down.
They sent him home with a prescription, a date with his GP and with a shrink.

His main concern was, he didn't want to get locked up in a padded cell or in a straightjacket.

Can't blame him there! It's not exactly a trip to Disneyland to be 'contained' like that, and unfortunately that fear prevents lots of people from seeking help when they need it.

I'm glad he took that first giant step, admitting he was struggling with life. Can't blame him for that either. Life is fricken hard! grumble laugh

Thanks y'all.
The only reason I'm his friend is, he's a jerk and no one wants anything to do with him. I don't take his pushy crap.

The next door neighbor Bubbles just left.
