From personal experience, I know how tough it is. While he has a therapist, a dr, and meds, he still may need a helpline. Tell him that he should tell you about ALL of his problems, even if he finds it embarrassing or shameful. Let him know that no-one is going to laugh at any of his problems. Why would this poor guy want to be locked up in a padded room, when he has the choice of feeling more free in his own home? I truly understand. I actually think it's degrading to lock someone up like a caged animal, all because they're feeling like they're at their wits end. I understand it's to keep an eye on them, so that they don't off themselve's, but no wonder some are more dishevelled after staying in a padded room.

I'm thinking maybe you should hide all medications and cutlery whenever he visit's your house. If he can try it with his own, there's a chance he may try with anyone else's.

Give him the number to a suicide hotline or call them yourself and report him. They can give you advice if he won't call. And if he's determined....than that's what he wants. No offense, my father committed suicide and sometimes people are very depressed without hope, they don't want to stay here in misery, a lot of times it can be a chemical imbalance so I suggest he speaks to a dr. First and try the helpline. He may be just be going through a rough patch but things can always change for the better, we like to think.

They gave him a tranq at the hospital and his Dr gave him a scrip for Lexapro.
