There was an old movie I think called Shannondoah. In the movie a young boy was wishing to marry a young girl and in those days, of course, it was a custom for the man to ask the father if he could have her daughter in marriage. The father said" do you like her?". The boy said "I love her". The father said I did not ask you that I asked " do you like her?". Again the boy said ,"but I love her". The father said son before I can give my daughter to you in marriage I need to know if you like her first. You see love fades away, but if you like her you will be with her for life. This brings up the question which is more important Liking someone enough to say you will be there through thick and thin of the ups and downs or Love the person until things go bad and then realize you cant stay the relationship any longer?

I understand the whole primes of it all. Liking and loving are very important.Standing with someone as it should be. *shakes head solemnly* Not to be a pessimist but,not everyone's strong enough to do so.I believe that's why you have so many failed relationship(circumstances and what one will forgive and not forgive)!

I think it is easier to continue loving someone if you first LIKE Them,,,sometimes we are too wrapped up in the IDEA of love , we confuse attraction and fun and very temporary emotions with Love and when we fade we no longer feel like we 'love' them

I think we are apt to still 'like' someone even when they arent fun, or attractive,,etc,,

I think it's important to be friends with someone first before a romantic relationship develops for just this reason. If you are able to relate to each other on different levels, ad communicate in different ways, then the love part has a better chance of lasting.

I love people in my family, but I don't like all of them. I like and love my husband, so s
Ending time with him is a joy, not a burden!

I agree there is a big difference between like and love, and though love is thought to abide, conquer all, overcome all obstacles, be blind, and many other things, the truth is love is just an emotion.

Can two people sustain one common emotion for eternally? Common, that's expecting way too much if you ask me. But if they are also best friends and lovers, they don't have to be matched love for love through every minute of their relationship. I believe a lasting relationship has many facets and phases, and love and like, while vital components, are only two of them. IMO flowerforyou

I think a man would have to first like me, in order to fall inlove with me. Men are usually attracted to beauty and that is not love, so if he doesn't like the woman, he has no chance of falling inlove with her.

Love: compassion, pity, long suffering, its not self seeking. It always trusts. It is the only thing that remains! You do not even need to know a person to love them and throw what you have in your pocket into their cap, fight for them, or give your life for another. These things are true love. smitten

Now that makes me feel good about a marriage that
a society can use as an example. I like your contrast
with people in your family and a great marriage.
