First off not just any moron can prepare and serve food. Look at the quality of food and service you're getting, even in a fast food restaurant, and you'll realize that.

Secondly, fifteen dollars an hour ain't that much really when you look at how much a decent place to live and putting decent food on your table costs.

Thirdly, all restaurant workers are not teens or illiterates.

And fourth, when was the last time you tipped somebody at a Mickey Ds?

it depends upon the type of restaurant one is working at, a mcdonalds, or burger king, doesnt take much than tossing pre packaged products on a grill or in a fryer

a more expensive restaurant with a more extensive menu, usually includes an option ot tip and cooks are not paid on the same scale as servers, who are still, being friendly and delivering products to the customers tables

15 dollars an hour amounts to almost 2700 per month or 32 grand per year, which is actually pretty much for one persons wage at a job that requires nothing more than a hs diploma

all restaurant workers are not teens or illiterates, not all restaurant workers are employed with mere hs diplomas either, some are hired with more specialized training like chefs and are paid a different scale

but SERVERS and CASHIERS are probably not going to be earning 32000 per year , nor does their work justify such a salary,, in my opinion,,,,

whatever they do above and beyond the basics of pressing buttons and delivering products, is not a given and are rightfully left to customers to compensate for,,,

I would never tip a mcdonalds worker, unless they were exceptional in some way, which I have yet to meet at mcdonalds,

they dont do any service beyond cashiering and cooking,,,,,,they have a wage for that,,,

Thru all this it seems that people are missing an important element.... the tax on tips whether you get them or not. Taxed on an estimate... like some utility companies do.

I'll biotch about the wages of others (general laborers) when Washington and the corporations take a pay cut!

Obviously you haven't stopped at a fast food place staffed with minimum wage workers who don't give a crap about; providing
decent food and service, frying a burger properly, learning to make change, clean a table, or show up for work on time, because they can
easily get another minimum wage job down the block.

And you forgot to take taxes out of that 2,700 a month.
Taxes chop about a third off of a single persons wages.
And not all minimum wage workers are single.

but minimum wage was not meant for people to raise families on, they are created for young, inexperienced, people entering the job market,,,
that some people are trying to raise families off of minimum wage is more about the education and experience those people have acquired or not acquired than about the minimum wage

and it still stands that 15 per hour, is alot of money for a job that requires no special education or training,, the income tax bracket on such an income is actually only 15 percent so that still leaves 2300 a month, which is not going to provide a luxurious life for one person, but is manageable,,,,,

One of my several part time jobs to get through college was waiting tables. I made $1.09 an hour plus tips. The net was the best paying job I had in college.

I washed dishes and cooked for $1.10 when I was in high school.
I also worked in the military for not much more than that after
high school.

But that was a long time ago. Check out what a good college degree or a good hamburger costs these days. Prices have gone up, way up. And so should the minimum wage.

all restaurants are not the same, usually those with higher priced items have the potential for higher tips if waitstaff is giving good customer servcie

usually, fast food joints,, where the burger is 1 dollar, they arent going to pay the cashier 15 bucks for ringing the up

or if the pizza is 10 dollars, the waitress wont get 15 dollars for serving it

its just not mathematically logical or consistent,, wages are often a reflection of not only the skills invested in the job, but the profit received from the workers,,,,,

thats one reason why athletes and actresses can make outrageous wages,, because it is reflecting the profit their services bring in for their employer,,,
