It happened shortly after 7 a.m. just west of the intersection with Highway 51. Police said a pickup driven by Agapito Escutia-Chacon, 60, of Gervais, crossed the center line into the eastbound lane. Two cars heading east tried to avoid a collision, but troopers said they could not. An SUV driven by Mark Barnhart Jr., 35, of Falls City, was hit, and so was a car driven by Emily Campbell, 32, of Dallas. Campbell, an English teacher at North Salem High School, was pronounced dead at the scene. She had been a teacher at the school since 2005. Escutia-Chacon and Barnhart were taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. Troopers are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash. The eastbound lanes of Highway 22 were closed for more than four hours. According to Salem-Keizer School District, even though spring break has begun, there will be grief counseling for students and staff available at the North Salem High School library Monday starting at 10 a.m. |
