Cats would be my preference. One of the reasons for this is that though, like any pet, felines are dependant on the care and attention of kind, thoughtful and unselfish humans; they yet still manage to convey an air of doing/not doing exactly as they please whenever they please. In my experience cats are also playfully flirtatious and outrageously manipulative, especially when it comes to their need for play-time :)

In observing the cat in my household attempting to exercise her wiles over me I can't help but LOL at myself as i succumb, passively assenting to her will, and feeling a growing regard for her in return. (Mind you I am in no way fooled into thinking that she and I are all 'made-up') Many a time she gives me that utterly cool look as she ignores my attempts to engage with her. But I have learnt to accept that that is the way with cats - forever possessed of a 'wild side'.

Sometimes I wonder what my love for cats says about aspects of my innermost psyche ....

I am equal to both, cats are independent little creatures, I have four of them, cuddly and a comfort to me, I dont have dogs, but did when I was younger, and they are a joy to be around, I have neighbors that have dogs, and I love playing with there dogs, so you might say I have the best of both worlds.

I like both dogs and cats, but I prefer cats. They are less work and they don't bark in the middle of the night. The housecat will play fetch with you like a dog.

Dogs want to be loved, taken care of, dependent, trained (told what to do), played with ...
Cats want to be loved, taken care of, independent, respected ...

I love both but find it nearly impossible to live without a cat. Dogs require more work, at least if you're going to take care of them properly. I can't believe how many people NEVER walk their dogs or play with them, and expect them to magically be no trouble.

I had a cat that would play fetch. He would also search the house relentlessly for his toy if you hid it, and he could find it too. He also (1) "drank" water by dipping his foot in the bowl and licking it off, and never any other way (2) dunked his catnip mouse in the water dish to make catnip tea (3) never meowed, only chirped (he was a Maine Coon) (4) played tag with the dog all around the house.

The thing that dogs do better than cats is worship you. And who doesn't like to be worshipped? Also, you can do things with dogs. My last dog helped me clean up the yard, retrieved fish, picked up litter on our walks, did agility games with glee, and went cross-country skiing with me (though he refused to wear boots). Try getting a cat to do any of those things. Remember: dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Cats aren't as heartless as some people make out, though. When I was a teenager and having a typical teenage "awful day," I came home, threw myself on the couch crying, and the next thing I knew our family cat was lying next to me snuggling.

Definatley a dog person. As dogs seem to understand and respect you more eg: If you call a dog it will come and want to please and obey you. A cat chooses what it wants to do and has it's own rules :)

I just have to tell you this, because it happened yesterday. I was sitting on my bed with my legs crossed writing something, then wanted to get up and don't know what exactly happened, but somehow I had a very bad fall bacwards from the bad. My cat was napping on the bed, but when I fell down and was lying on the floor for a couple of minutes (from the shock and pain), my cat woke up and came to the edge of bed looking down at me for some time as if saying "Are you OK?" It was such a sight that it made me laugh. Was it just cat's curiosity or worry?

I do think that once you have been brought up with pets, you then include them as paret of your family and carry on having them throughout your life.

I rescue cats when they come to me for help. This one did. He needs a home. I'm taking him to the vet today. He was in a fight and is injured.

Dogs for sure. Dogs follow you anywhere you take them. They love to play indoors or out. They obey commands and are very affectionate. Even when you call them over for a hug or petting time. My dog even watches movies. My experience with cats is, They never come when you call them. They only want to be petted when they want. They wont follow you outdoors. Nor do they learn any tricks. They leave hair everywhere. You have to constantly be cleaning a litter box.
