Canadian Researchers Demolish The Myth Of Mother Teresa’s Goodness
Posted by JacobSloan on March 13, 2013

First exposed as a fraud by Christopher Hitchens, renowned twentieth-century saint Mother Teresa now appears to have been more of a monster. Via EurekAlert!:

The myth of altruism and generosity surrounding Mother Teresa is dispelled in a paper by Serge Larivée and Genevieve Chenard of University of Montreal’s Department of Psychoeducation and Carole Sénéchal of the University of Ottawa. The three researchers collected and analyzed 502 documents on the life and work of Mother Teresa.

At the time of her death, Mother Teresa had opened 517 missions welcoming the poor and sick in more than 100 countries. Two-thirds of the people coming to these missions hoped to a find a doctor to treat them, while the other third lay dying without receiving appropriate care. [There was] a significant lack of hygiene, even unfit conditions, as well as a shortage of actual care, inadequate food, and no painkillers. The problem is not a lack of money—the Foundation created by Mother Teresa has raised hundreds of millions of dollars—but rather a particular conception of suffering and death: “There is something beautiful in seeing the poor accept their lot, to suffer it like Christ’s Passion. The world gains much from their suffering,” was her reply to criticism.

Mother Teresa was generous with her prayers but rather miserly with her foundation’s millions when it came to humanity’s suffering. During numerous floods in India or following the explosion of a pesticide plant in Bhopal, she offered numerous prayers and medallions of the Virgin Mary but no direct or monetary aid. On the other hand, she had no qualms about accepting the Legion of Honour and a grant from the Duvalier dictatorship in Haiti. Millions of dollars were transferred to the MCO’s various bank accounts, but most of the accounts were kept secret, Larivée says.

Despite these disturbing facts, how did Mother Teresa succeed in building an image of holiness and infinite goodness? According to the three researchers, her meeting in London in 1968 with the BBC’s Malcom Muggeridge, an anti-abortion journalist who shared her right-wing Catholic values, was crucial. Muggeridge decided to promote Teresa, who consequently discovered the power of mass media. In 1969, he made a eulogistic film of the missionary, promoting her by attributing to her the “first photographic miracle,” when it should have been attributed to the new film stock being marketed by Kodak. Afterwards, Mother Teresa travelled throughout the world and received numerous awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize.

Sorry I believe that I was actually following the conversation. However, if the mods deem it off topic, I would be more than happy to repost it to its own thread, entitled- Should Xianity be viewed as a crime against humanity.

No, Christians and other faiths at least attempt to follow peaceful ways. Muslims and their on the other hand are less than kind to others and non-believers. See what has been happening in Pakistan lately. Good try though.smile2

As someone posted early, this is the same behaviour the Xian church did, its ascension was due to the wholesale slaughter and destruction of the Pagan culture and the fall of the Roman Empire. This includes the Inquistion, Witch Hunts, etc. What stopped it was the church losing power to secular forces and the Reneassiance; have you read The Serve? This book outlines how renewed interest in Pagan philosophy brought down the church's power.

The main difference that I see is that even in the modern era which should disspell many silly notions, they remain is Islamic culture. I assume the solution is to bring the education and socio-economic levels of the people up, so that they can reject the lies told them by their leaders.

Also, interesting enough, a most scholarly studies of the Koran hold that Islam is a form of the teachings of one of the apostles who traveled into the Arabian desert.

Again, what officials in the Roman Catholic Church did centuries ago wasnt necessarily a reflection of the teachings of the New Testament, and it wasn't necessarily a reflection of all Christendom at that time.

For what it's worth, the Roman Catholic Church didn't come into existence until the year 1054 CE, when the patriarch of Rome became officially separated from the other Church patriarchs. Prior to that time, the patriarch of Rome shared authority with the other patriarchs. This governance by a group of patriarchs helped to prevent an abuse of authority by any one patriarch.

ms 1cynderella...respected madam i don't know u belong from which respected religion,bt i would like to make some words on hinduism ,as u said that hinduism is must be probably second religion which practise 'genital mutilation'..mam this is wrong,as a hindu i believe or i know we don't practice or appreciate any kind of barbaric or heinous act on women, yes i accept that some of the people's from our religion does this crime..bt there number is equal to approx none,so respected madam 1cynderella,can we blame hinduism for this,i am very much unhappy for some improper women treatment in my nation,bt i wanna fight against it to make our proud women stronger in our nation,bt i don't find any thing wrong in my religious views on woman,it does not guide its followers for any kind of crime and injustice to women....nice to share my view to you respected lady:)tc

I certainly meant no disrespect to you or anyone else. The person I replied to asked me if any other religions practice it and as you yourself say, some Hindus do indeed. My mistake was listing Hindu as if in a list, instead of stating "some". I appologize for that oversight and have to also say that not ALL Muslims practice the ritual either.

The way I see it, you and I don't get a say as to whether we think it's right or wrong in India, Africa, or anywhere else were a country allows it to happen. As a US citizen, I certainly don't get a vote anywhere but here.

I am none of those religions, and have no issue with any given religion. My post did not blame any religion for the existance of such practices, in fact I wrote that the practice of female castration is not religious in nature even though some religious people practice it, it is a cultural practice, therefore no religion can be blamed for its continued practice.

If you want my personal view on that issue, I will tell you that I believe this is more prevalent in under educated areas of the world. I think they have done if for so long and believe it's the right thing to do. I think they know no other way of life, or way of seeing things as you and I see them...at least we seem to agree that it's a horrible practice. As most things are, education is the key to empowering people to make the decision to stop dong harmful things themeselves.

Totally correct and agreed on ur view:)

the muslims havent unilaterally 'said' anything

they are billions of people in dozens of subsects (just like christians) who all have slight differences in their views and interpretations of their holy book (just like christians)

yes, the muslims have unilaterally said said something... that there religion is "peace and love"... only problem is that they say say it right before the bomb goes off, killing 75 innocent people... 26,000 attacks from suicide bombers since 9-11, and they've killed more people than the entire Iraq war...

You don't know how many Muslims are "crazies" or how many just want to kill, and you probably don't even know how many Muslims exist. You are just spouting hate speech.
