I was submissive to my wife and she was submissive to me. I'm not so sure the OP meant "rug". As brought up, we might be putting a little spin on the words to suit past experiences or stereotypes.

I don't really picture what she was saying as a man standing over the woman with a club in hand or the woman walking around in Amish clothes.

I get the feeling we are in the company of some paint brushes here. Painting is a good thing, but do you guys see what I do with her comments? Maybe not cause when I read what she said and read the responses I see to different artist at work on those canvases.

It takes time (and effort) to understand someone else's culture and ways and thinking and preferences etc...We're not going to find a glove that fits perfectly on our hand when we're dealing with people...Sometimes we may run into "difficulties" when we're trying to get to know and understand someone who is outside of our "immediate realm." (This applies to people we date and friends and even our spouses at times.)...If we're in need of a "perfect clone" and replica of "who we are" maybe we should just stick with mirrors and leave people alone!
