It's a day like my birthday and new year's and christmas where I get to feel crap about myself and the fact that I am single and lonely, with my life just passing me by.

It's the world rubbing it in that nobody really cares about me apart from my family, as if I didn't already know that and needed to be reminded of that fact. It depresses the hell out of me.

Something you may like, that I used to do was to invite all my single friends over for "Orphan's Thanksgiving." It was for everyone that didn't have family in the area to spend time with during the holiday. I'd cook a good meal, serve wine and we'd all have a fun. Much better than feeling lonely.

We used to do this when I lived in AZ in the late 70's.. Lived in a small apartment complex and everyone there was from somewhere else and had no family.. First time I ever had turkey cooked on a grill...lol Everybody brought something and we ate outside by the pool, one guy even brought his guitar and we sang and had fun... Sure beats being alone on any holiday...bigsmile

To me it is just one of those weird American celebrations that i do not get...like Halloween and Thanksgiving. Still i bought a box of chocolate to my wife... "If you are in Rome..." lol

None of those days are just celebrated in America. Canada has a Thanksgiving, too. Several other countries celebrate both Valentine's day and Halloween.

I am pretty sure that Canada's Thanksgiving it is on a different date and for a completely different reason, since Canada and USA have a completely different colonial background. As for Valentine's day and Halloween, while it is true that they are celebrations really old (with origins that can be traced down to Pagan Rome and Celtics rites) and that are not related to the new world in any way; they were not a very popular thing around the world. They have their peak in the USA. Over the past 100 years more countries have started to celebrate them due to USA's influence in Pop culture...thus it is widely perceived and an "American thing", specially in countries of non Anglo-Saxon origin.

Yes; our Thanksgiving is in October instead of November like the Americans. The whole point that Sing was saying is that holidays like Christmas, Valentine's, Halloween aren't strictly American Holidays as other countries recognize them too.

Everyone has their own way of dealing with holidays, due to their own life experiences. Friends have told me some of my ways are wrong. OHH well, they are right for me.

Valentines Day, is my son's ACTUAL marriage anniversary.

I think I'll go play some anti valentines songs. 'I am an anarchist' by Sex Pistols is always a good one. laugh.

He He. Maybe you should play the song "Love Stinks" by the J. Geils band. laugh

Ha ha. Yeah. I'll add that to my playlist. :devilfork:

love is in the air as we go about give cady flowers what does valentine mean to you

For my daughter and her new boyfriend it is a day to be romantic and enjoy a loved ones company. For me it's just another work day where people buy entirely too much stuff and at the end of the day I get to go home alone to cuddle my puppy dog.

Agreed. I use to be bitter about Valentine's day but it dawned on me that I was being silly and jealous of others. I was being petty at best. Commercialization has ruined every holiday and that is sad. I would like to think of Valentine's day as a day that a couple take that time to say; "Hey; life is hectic and I may not show it or say it all the time; but I truly do love you. Let's make this day completely about us and shut off the rest of the the world". Valentine's day doesn't have to be expensive as that surely depends on the person you are with. If they are greedy person; then yep it'll be expensive. Love should never be bought whether it's Valentine's day, Christmas, or their birthday but unfortunately our society is so brainwashed that they think spending money is the only way to show love. How sad we are as a race. whoa

LoL, non of you two got my point... I was simply saying that Valentine's Day is silly, for some weird reason Sing decided to focus her attention in the fact that I drop "American" there. On my second post I clarify that I know that their not American celebrations, and I explained why I decided use that word and I also explained why her example of Canadian Thanksgiving was not valid. Again, while they have the same name they are completely 2 different celebrations.
Going back to my point....Valentine's day is retarded... Im going to start promoting the celebration of Lupercalia, the original celebration in which the Catholic one was created. Now that was fun... Romans, they did know how to party LOL.

nah thanks anyway
doesn't have quite the same ring or spirit of thoughtfulness

I think it's very thoughtful to not insist someone go out of their way to prove how thoughtful they are to me. Their company is enough.

I agree there should be no insisting - if I have to insist to get a man to be thoughtful then I will not want that relationship (been there - never again)

well I like to celebrate Valentine's in some fashion - I would prefer someone who felt the same way but I would not tell others what the right thinking is for them. those are individual choices

Well, I think Christmas is retarded. It promotes greed and glutenay, people fighting over parking spots, depression, and stresses people out; yet everyone seems okay with it. Funny how everyone hates a day that celebrates love but yet would celebrate a day of greed and glutenay.

Valentine's day is abs0lutely nothing to me... Receive chocolates every valentines day but feeling empty as it is not from the person I love.

I have a friend of mine that has sent me two Roses for the last two years on Valentine's day as he hates that I am alone and forgotten on Valentine's day. Although its not necessary; I think its sweet that he does this for me and I certainly wouldn't feel empty just because it wasn't a lover that sent me the Roses. shocked

You have a friend wh0 loves and care ab0ut you. I w0ndered if he didn't keep feelings towards you.

He is a dear friend but that's all we will ever be. He is a brother to me and doesn't want anything more than our friendship which also works for me too.

Single Awareness Day... that's about it, lol.

But honestly, if I were in a relationship... I would do things unexpectedly, on days when the rest of the world was taking their relationships for granted. Any kind of gift or romantic gestures from me would be pretty frequent, and more "just because" than due to it being any given day of any given month. That isn't to say I wouldn't still do something on Valentines Day, but it's definitely an over-rated occasion. It wouldn't need to be Feb 14th for my girl to know I care about her, flat out.
