Was it wrong not to get involved?

Here is my scenario. Its rush hour; dark; slippery; a guy jaywalks in front of my car; I hit the brakes; which almost causes the car behind me to hit me, and I come very close to running him over. I tap the horn lightly to alert the guy that he really should get off the road before he gets killed. He salutes me with one finger and heads to sidewalk. I pull up to the lights and he decides to come back to my car, screaming at me and pounding on my windows. He then proceeds to beat on my car which pisses me off; so I get out of the car (wearing a dress; not a uniform) and tell him to stop doing that or I will knock him on his butt. He backs away and leaves. Now while this is going on the all the vehicle drivers around me were men. None of them got out of their vehicles to assist me. I am cool with that but my male friend says they should have assisted me. I disagree as 1) it was my problem solely, and 2) these men could have endangered themselves by trying to be a good Samaritan not knowing how me or the jaywalker could have reacted to the interference. I would like to hear your opinions about this situation as I see nothing wrong with how it all went down.

The situation was not escalating after you confronted him he backed off. If the guy had tried to attack you the men in the other cars should then have come to your aid.You handled it right but be careful.

Thanks. Yeah; I am mindful of the situations before I get into them. I learned a thing or two having served in the Military police.

Mmm as a woman, I could not have passed by
YOUR situation without at least pausing to
see if you needed aid.

I realize the query is more, did you handle
it correctly.
I am thinking if I had your balls I would
have done the same :-)

However, as I do not, I would have driven
away from him immediately.

There was one night I was coming home late when this Cholo decided to do figure 8s in the intersection on a bicycle. I hit my horn and he dropped his bike in the middle of the intersection and called me out of my car. Well, I obliged him and came out of my car with a tire iron in my hand. I chased his azz for about a half a block when I decided he was not going to stick around for his beating. I grabbed his abandoned bike and tossed it in a yard with a really pissed off pair of dogs in it and got back to my car and left. The people sitting at the bus stop near by applauded me as I tossed his bike and left. Wannabe gangster had no balls.

If you are going to confront people do so armed! You have no idea if they are going to pull a knife or gun. At least you stand a chance if the guy is psyched out on drugs and got that crazy Adrenalin strength boost going on!

Well; its very unlikely that the average person here will be toting a gun and I know how to disarm a person with a knife; however perhaps a tire iron might be a good idea if this happens again. bigsmile

If he had tried to do something to you after you got out of your car, then yes, I would say someone should have stopped.

But why would you get out of your car rather than drive away??

navygirl..I admire your guts and courage. I'm sure you gained a lot of confidence and skills when you served in the Military police...I'm glad the guy ran off and glad you're okay...Personally it does seem strange to me that no one stopped to offer some help or back-up. I wonder if anyone called the police from their cell phone..Anyway I'm proud of you for handling the situation by yourself. You know what you're doing and have skills and experience based on your background.

Thanks Greeneyes. My friend thought as soon as the guy approached my vehicle and started beating on my driver's window that someone should have stepped in but as I said it was really my problem to deal with and one can never be to careful about interfering with a dispute. I can recall breaking up a domestic dispute where the guy is beating his wife; pulled the guy off and she attacked me. Strange world out there; so I am not upset that these men did not help.

I see nothing wrong with what you did; it is good the jaywalker went on and didn't try to fight you. With you being in the Military you may have been able to whip his butt anyhow. laugh

Maybe the least they could have done was call the police, especially since you were stuck there for 10 mins.

Unless you live in Bear country! Then the Canuks carry guns! Canadians don't like to feed the bears either!
