Meanwhile, back in the real world...

Meet the Assadosphere, the Online Defenders of Syria’s Butcher
By Spencer Ackerman

12.11.125:42 PM

You might think it’s hard to defend Bashar Assad, the Syrian dictator responsible for the murder of 40,000 human beings. You must be new to the internet.

Assad doesn’t have many allies IRL — Iran and Russia are about the only ones remaining. But as the Syrian rebellion stretches into its 20th month, he’s found (and paid for) a whole heap of friends online, who warn of an impending NATO invasion to dominate Syria; secret CIA shipments of weapons to terrorist groups; and, of course, that Assad’s enemies are all really Jews. Welcome to the Assadosphere — on Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and the web.

Assad has maintained a robust propaganda presence for years: Remember the infamous Vogue profile of his wife Asma, which praised the “wildly democratic” Assad family right as it began its wave of bloodshed. Assad’s online buddies are the next wave of that propaganda: They’ve taken a defense of his regime viral, to the point where they don’t need to take their marching orders from Damascus. They’re contesting the web and social-media space that would otherwise be filled with recitations of Assad’s war crimes — and flooding the zone.

We’ve seen these characters show up occasionally in our comment threads and Facebook pages. But the most efficient portal into online Assad apologias comes from the Twitter hashtag #RealSyria. There, you’ll learn that the Free Syrian Army, “aka al Qaeda” is “preparing suits etc. for chemical weapons false flag.” You’ll see links to YouTube clips from the “Eretz Zen Channel” to learn how the rebels torture citizens with “flesh burning materials.” (Not that said rebels are in said video.) And you’ll find people skeptical of the “HUUURR DURRRR” that that nice Mr. Assad would ever use his “supposed” chemical weapons. It’s not like an Assad spokesman warned the world last July that “these types of weapons are [under] the direct supervision of the Syrian armed forces and will never be used unless Syria is exposed to external aggression.”

Then there’s the News About Syria-English blog, Facebook page and Google+ account. It invariably describes the Syrian rebels as “terrorists”; takes at face value Assad’s declarations that he’ll “not use chemical weapons, if it possesses any, whatever the circumstances“; and warns that last year’s war in Libya has yet to satisfy NATO’s “thirst for blood.”

And on like that. SyriaTribune maintains a YouTube channel stocked with clips from — surprise — Vladimir Putin’s Russia Today portraying Assad as the victim of a bloody-minded western conspiracy. A self-described French intellectual named Thierry Meyssan — author of 9/11 The Big Lie — reveals that TV images purporting to show Assad’s massacres of civilians were prepared by the CIA, along with White House deputy national security advisor Ben Rhodes, and “aims at demoralizing the Syrians in order to pave the way for a coup d’etat.” The #FakeRevolution hashtag on Instagram provides pictorial, meme-filled boosterism for Bashar, like a screengrab from Time’ app kindly telling user mybubb1e to stop voting for Assad for Person of the Year or Hillary Clinton with flames shooting out of her eyes and ear, courtesy of Bashar4Ever.

Now, the Syrian rebellion is eclectic, and it includes some rather extreme elements –including al-Qaida-aligned terrorists. Human Rights Watch has borne witness to its willingness to execute and torture detainees. But human rights abuses can’t be the real issue for these web and social-media accounts: if so, they’d be turning on Assad, who drops cluster bombs on Syrian cities and has killed more civilians over the last 20 months than perhaps any other despot in power. And anyone defending Assad because they hate the idea of another U.S. invasion might consider that the Obama administration evidently wants to stay out of Syria at all costs. Yes, the Syrian rebels might actually acquire chemical weapons in the wake of Assad’s downfall, and that’s legitimately worrisome, but perhaps some ire might be spared for the regime that, you know, created that chemical stockpile.

Of course, the Syrian rebels use Twitter, Facebook and YouTube for everything from propaganda to weapons training, so perhaps it’s unsurprising that Assad’s defenders seek to contest that online space. It’s the internet; people say terrible things on it. But the Assadosphere is the sort of thing that Block and Unfollow functions were created for.

According to Bashar Assad’s defenders on Instagram, the U.S. media hides from you how the Jews control the Syrian rebellion, or something. Image: Instagram/Laith Belal

This sounds all too familiar. laugh

And a word from that favourite of Press2 and RT, Webster Tarpley:

Good on you, Webster, you're hysterical! laugh

Lap it up, kids!

Don't be too hard on ol' Webster; While I agree his views on the Dalai Lama are a bit comical, he nevertheless makes some good points regarding pre-1959 Tibet.

THanks for the very informative link & the hilarious cartoon...I owe ya one. laugh

It's his twoofer nonsense and BS about Syria that qualify him as a moron. That is why RT and Presstv love him-pure unsubstantiated anti-western bias.

THanks for the very informative link & the hilarious cartoon...I owe ya one.

As it is unadulterated Bullsh*t, I thought you'd appreciate it. Furthermore, I'm not surprised you liked the openly anti-semitic cartoon. As I said, "lap it up, kids". Bon Appetit

That is (of course) absolute rubbish.

While the term's etymology might suggest that antisemitism is directed against all Semitic peoples, the term was coined in the late 19th century in Germany as a more scientific-sounding term for Judenhass ("Jew-hatred"), and that has been its normal use since then. For the purposes of a 2005 U.S. governmental report, antisemitism was considered "hatred toward Jews—individually and as a group—that can be attributed to the Jewish religion and/or ethnicity."

3.Likening Israel to Nazi Germany, or to traditional anti-Jewish stereotypical behavior is another sure sign of Jew-baiting. *Check*

This is not the 19th century anymore. How about using words in the proper manner? How about getting your brain out of the past?

Yes, I know where the term was "coined" and by whom. (In Germany by Zionists and Nazis)

Hitler's Zionists propaganda defined the word incorrectly and repeating it over and over and over it was brain washed into the weak minds of the public.

At one time there may have been a lot of Semitic Jews in Germany, but I think we know what happened to them. Now all you hear about are the Ashkenazi European Jews of Israel. They seem to be all that is left. Odd don't you think?

We know what "anti" means and we know what "Semite" means. Anyone with half a brain can define that word correctly unless they have been brainwashed.

You can either think for yourself or accept your improper and incorrect programming like a robot.

In any case, it is an incorrect, out dated, term steeped in propaganda and drummed into the collective unconscious. I don't accept that programming because I know better.

The majority of the Zionists ruling Israel today ARE NOT SEMITES and are not Jewish and they don't practice Judaism. Judaism is a peaceful religion. Israel has never been a peaceful nation.

Millions of anti-Zionist real Jewish people refuse to accept Israel as a Jewish State and refuse to move there.

The Bible prophecy of all the Jews returning to Israel has not and will not ever actually happen. It is myth.

Do you ever read? Note this (for the last phuquing time!):

As for the rest, what a load of horsesh*t! You'd argue black was white. I did a unit on anti-semitism at university and it was about (wait for it) discrimination against Jews (there's a thing) in the 19th & 20th centuries, whether based on religion or ethnicity. If you choose to re-define the word to suit some BS agenda, don't expect everyone to believe you, for the meaning is clear to everyone but you it would seem.

Now, please don't hijack this thread with anti-semitic diatribes. Some of us are sick of this category being a soapbox for anti-semitic plants. This thread is about the last days of Assad's regime in Syria. There are plenty of anti-semitic threads for you to exercise your prejudice.

Thank you.

So I will repeat: (since repetition is all you understand apparently)

We know what "anti" means and we know what "Semite" means.

Anyone with half a brain can define that word correctly unless they have been brainwashed.

Brainwashing consists of REPEATING SOMETHING OVER AND OVER AND OVER until the brain accepts it.

I don't know how to unbrainwash you, so this effort will probably fail.

Do I ever read? Of course I do. I read more than you do.

Do I believe everything I read? Nope.

Do I agree with everything I read? NOPE.

Do I accept something just because it comes from some "authority" without using my own logic and my own brain? NOPE.

Do I accept everything "university" teaches. Definitely not.

No, you only jumped to that conclusion because your comprehension is so poor. Read it again.

So I will repeat: (since repetition is all you understand apparently)

We know what "anti" means and we know what "Semite" means.

In spite of all the official consensus regarding meaning, you come up with your own and harass anyone who doesn't agree. Are you for real? laugh I mean, seriously?

Brainwashing consists of REPEATING SOMETHING OVER AND OVER AND OVER until the brain accepts it.

I don't know how to unbrainwash you, so this effort will probably fail.

So, I don't adopt your definition, I'm brainwashed. Are you for real? You're only making yourself look silly (yet again).

Do I ever read? Of course I do. I read more than you do.

I doubt that. You have no idea of what I read, how much and how quickly. Why do you repeatedly make such asinine statements?

Do I believe everything I read? Nope.

No-one does.

Do I agree with everything I read? NOPE.

No-one does.

Do I accept something just because it comes from some "authority" without using my own logic and my own brain? NOPE.

Most people don't.

Do I accept everything "university" teaches. Definitely not.

No student does. I know you have an irrational prejudice against learning, but obviously you have never been to university, because if you had, you would know that the institutions reinforce research and investigation in order to prove an hypothesis. Lectures are only a guide and if you disagree with accepted conventions you better be able to prove it.

Your personal definition of anti-semitism means nothing to anyone but you. Got it? The rest of the world knows the accepted definition, so live with it!

Now, please go away, as I'm sick and tired of your insane diatribes. This is a thread about the fall of Assad, not your irrational prejudices, or inane definitions.

Now, back to sanity.

Syria’s top ally, Russia, says regime may fall

Hamida Ghafour
Foreign Affairs Reporter

Syrian president Bashar Assad’s most important ally, Russia, appeared to be backing away from the beleaguered regime after a senior Russian official admitted for the first time that its days may be numbered.

The Syrian opposition was winning more territory and rebels may win the civil war, deputy foreign minister Mikhail Bogdanov said, according to the state-run Ria Novosti news agency.

The rebels claimed to control 60 per cent of territory, and were becoming more confident because of arms supplies from abroad and growing international recognition of its legitimacy, he added.

“We have to face up to reality,” he said. “Sadly, a victory by the Syrian opposition cannot be ruled out.”

Bogdanov didn’t suggest, however, that Russia would immediately change its stance toward Assad — which has been one of unwavering support throughout the uprising.

But his remarks represent a huge shift.

As the uprising evolved from peaceful protests in March 2011 to all-out civil war, Russia has vetoed three Western-sponsored UN Security Council resolutions demanding sanctions or condemnation.

Russian and Syrian ties date back to 1950s, when Syria began buying arms from the Soviet Union. Assad’s father Hafez, who seized power in a 1970 coup, had personal ties to the Soviets and many Syrian military officers have been trained in Russia.

Bogdanov’s comments were echoed by NATO secretary-general Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who said on Thursday that the regime was “approaching collapse” and it was a “question of time” before Assad’s forces lost.

“I urge the regime to stop violence, to realize what is the actual situation and initiate a process that leads to the accommodation of the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people,” he said at a news conference in Brussels.

On Wednesday, 114 countries and organizations including the U.S. recognized the newly formed National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people.

Rasmussen also confirmed earlier U.S. reports that “Scud-type missiles” were being fired by the Syrian government. But Syrian authorities denied the accusations as “untrue rumours” through the state-run news agency Sana.

Government forces were “systematically” targeting doctors, hospitals and ambulances which contravened the laws of war, said Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) co-ordinator Patrick Wieland, in an interview with the Star.

The medical charity called on Syrian authorities to give permission to international medical teams to enter the eastern city of Deir Essor, where tens of thousands of civilians are trapped and under bombardment.

“The aerial bombardments and sniper fire is making evacuating patients by stretcher extremely difficult,” said Wieland, who recently returned from Syria. “This is the main thing about the conflict in Syria, that medical people, health facilities, ambulances are targeted. It is unprecedented.”

A Syrian analyst said the imminent demise of the regime was exaggerated.

Russia has provided financial and military support, such as high-tech signal-jamming equipment for intelligence purposes, but the regime was designed to withstand the collapse of Russian support, said Paul Salem, director of Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut.

“If there is something new and dramatic, that could indicate an end game, but one must not underestimate the firepower of the regime,” he said, speaking from Beirut. “It is powerfully entrenched in Damascus and four miles from the Lebanese border.”

The area around that border is controlled by Hezbollah, the militant Shiite group supported by Assad, whose Alawite faith is an offshoot of Shiism. And Iran and Iraq, both Shiite majority countries in a Sunni-dominated region, have been flying munitions and arms through Iraqi airspace to help their brethren, Salem said.

“It is possible for rebels to win but the fight for Damascus could take many, many months. Look at Beirut,” Salem said, noting that the Lebanese capital was divided between sectarian factions during the 15-year civil war that ended in 1990.

The fighting continued around the suburbs of Damascus on Thursday. A bomb blast near a school in the Qatana suburb killed 16 people, half of them women and children, Syria’s official state news agency Sana reported. The Justice Palace and Mezzah 86 area, which is heavily populated by Alawites, were also struck by opposition fighters.

Meanwhile, Mouaz al Khatib, the leader of the new political coalition, said Syrians no longer needed the international community’s support to topple Assad because they have come this far.

“Now the Syrian people have nothing to lose,” he told Reuters. “They handled their problems by themselves. They no longer need international forces to protect them.”

Syria: Cameron secures EU pledge to review arms embargo

David Cameron has pressured the European Union into taking all measures to support Syria's opposition, including the arming of rebels early next year, after he warned that "inaction and indifference are not options".

By Bruno Waterfield, Tim Ross in Brussels and Damien McElroy
2:43PM GMT 14 Dec 2012

The British Prime Minister told other European leaders at a Brussels summit on Friday morning that the EU could no longer stand by as Bashar al-Assad's regime stepped up its war against the Syrian people.

"The situation is truly dreadful and getting worse. Forty thousand people are dead already there's a hard winter coming, there is an extreme humanitarian situation on the ground," he said.

"This is a desperate crisis that is taking place on our watch. People will ask in future years, what did you do to help deal with this situation, to help bring about a transition, to help get rid of President Assad? There is no single simple answer but inaction and indifference are not options."

Mr Cameron, with French support, has scored a major diplomatic victory by pushing reluctant EU leaders into a firm commitment that arming or providing logistical military support to Syrian rebels will be on the agenda of a meeting of European foreign ministers on 31 January.

For the first time, the EU has instructed foreign ministers "to work on all options to support and help the opposition and to enable greater support for the protection of civilians".

The new harder diplomatic language also commits the EU to working for "political transition... towards a future without President Assad and his illegitimate regime" in move that paves the way for the West to give military support to rebels early next year.

"I want a very clear message to go to President Assad that nothing is off the table," he said.

"I want us to help shape that opposition, advise and work with it, so we can see the speediest possible transition in Syria. It's a very difficult situation, there are no easy answers, these things take time. But as an EU and as a country, Britain, we should be doing everything we can to speed up that transition."

Britain will next month table changes to the EU arms embargo on Syria that would allow European states to supply weapons to the military wing of the Syrian Opposition Council.

One proposal would retain an embargo banning sales to Syrian regime forces but allow exports to its opponents when the measure is renewed.

Supporters of Syria's rebels are preparing to negotiate significant changes to the embargo ahead of the EU foreign minister's meeting on January 31, officials said.

However a diplomatic push on the embargo would depend on the Syrian opposition establishing a formal military command that excluded al-Qaeda linked groups.

"The embargo going forward from March should only apply to the official Syrian army but in making this argument it will be important that any aid supplied from Europe will only go to a military council of the opposition coalition and prevented leakage of arms to al-Qaeda factions," an official involved in the preparations said.

Francois Hollande, the French President, said the tide was turning against Assad and that EU action in the days and weeks ahead would be criticial.

"On the ground, the war is now turning against Assad and we should set ourselves this objective - make Assad leave as quickly as possible," he said.

Syria troops press assault near Damascus

7:04am December 16, 2012

Syrian forces are assaulting rebel areas southwest of Damascus and insurgents have captured large parts of a military school in the north as the nation's conflict enters its 22nd month.

Syrian warplanes bombarded the town of Moadamiyat al-Sham, southwest of Damascus, while the army deployed reinforcements and attempted to storm the rebel-held town of Daraya, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Saturday.

In Daraya, rebels held out against fierce army attempts to break in on several fronts, the Britain-based Observatory said.

"This is the 28th day the criminal (President Bashar al-) Assad's forces have attempted to break into the town," read a statement from activists in Daraya.

Clashes also erupted in the Palestinian camp of Yarmuk in the south of the capital between rebels and troops backed by pro-regime Palestinian fighters, the Observatory reported.

The outskirts of Damascus have been at the heart of fighting this month as the regime launches operations to reclaim territory within eight kilometres of the city.

In northern Damascus, the army foiled an attempted car bomb attack, state television said.

"Army forces deactivated a car bomb laden with 1000 kilograms of explosives in Barzeh," the broadcaster said.

Meanwhile, the rebels came close to scoring a significant victory in the northern province of Aleppo - a fierce battleground for several months - as they captured large parts of an infantry academy in Muslimiyeh, north of the embattled city of Aleppo, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Observatory.

"This is one of the most important military academies in all of Syria," he added, noting that rebels have seized control of some two thirds of the academy complex.

At least 24 rebel fighters, including Abu Furat, a top rebel commander in the province of Aleppo, and 20 regime troops were killed in the battle for the academy on Saturday.

The Observatory said 103 people were killed across Syria on Saturday, among them 27 civilians, 46 rebels and 30 soldiers.

Iran sends elite troops to aid Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria

Iran is intensifying its support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad by sending 150 senior Revolutionary Guards commanders to Syria to help repel opposition attempts to overthrow the government.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/iran/9526858/Iran-sends-elite-troops-to-aid-Bashar-al-Assad-regime-in-Syria.html

Western intelligence officials say that Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has personally sanctioned the dispatch of the experienced officers to ensure that the Assad regime, Iran's most important regional ally, survives the threat to its survival.

In addition, Iran has shipped hundreds of tons of military equipment, including guns, rockets, and shells, to Syria through the regular air corridor that has been established between Damascus and Tehran.

Intelligence officials believe the increased Iranian support has been responsible for the growing effectiveness of the Assad regime's tactics in forcing anti-government rebel groups on the defensive.

In the past few weeks, pro-Assad forces have seized the offensive by launching a series of well-coordinated attacks against rebel strongholds in Damascus and Aleppo.

The Iranian operation to support Mr Assad is being masterminded by Qassem Suleimani, the head of the Guards' Quds force which is responsible for overseeing Iran's overseas operations. The decision to increase Iran's support for Syria was taken after the Syrian defence minister and Assad's brother-in-law were killed in a suicide bomb attack at Syria's national security headquarters in July, together with a number of other senior defence officials.

Oh, definitely gorgeous-no argument there.

NWO? Yes, if your talking about the CT version of NWO, it is a crank hypothesis without verifiable proof.

I await the inevitable hijacking.
