Topic: Did my opinion change your Mind?

I think these forums are a great place, to let others know your opinion and get a sense of who you are, but do other posts you participate in end up changing your mind?

I find that I always consider others opinions and am very open minded, but mostly I find myself believing what I already thought in the first place.

Some of them do add to my conviction and others just get me to think about from another point of view. Some are just lame.

Whats your take on it?
Do you grow from what you learn here, or are you completely set in your ways?

Sometimes after I think on it a while I change my mind.

Most of the time it doesn't. But every now and then someone can show a perspective from an angle I didn't see. Almost all of the time I just enjoy reading even if I don't comment. But 8 or 9 times out of 10, I can agree to disagree without prejudice bigsmile

I believe if a sugar pill works, it should be used

interesting question. I would say that my thoughts are seldom set in stone. I do enjoy facts, but there are so many things that cannot be determined by tossing facts about. There are things that have facts that can prove and other facts that can disprove; charismatic expression of opinion is the delineating factor. Is someone eloquent, charismatic and interesting enough to sway others to their views? I have noticed throughout life that facts matter most when presented by the charismatic. Facts can be omitted or tweaked to fit most stances on most highly debated subjects.

Back to the question, I have not been here long (about 30 min!), but I am open to change, but not often swayed on many things. I rely on research and experience mostly; but have altered my opinion or portions of it, due to discussions. I find that many things are just plain fun to argue... er... discuss.

I think we really can have more control of our own health through mind over matter, but our minds are often convinced by outside influences (including the health profession) that we cannot get through on our own and so we dont

This is very curious, MsHarmony.

Let's say mind has power over matter. In that case, a broken leg could and must be healed by mind. Whereas it does not. Nor does an ear infection, or astigmatism, or even a common cold.

So much for mind over matter.

But wait!! There is more!!

If you say that a pscyhiatric disease, and its cure or treatment, is a matter of mind over matter, then you are stating that the emotional ills are not related to the mind, but to matter, like parts of the brain. So to be depressed, in grief, feel hunger, be angry... are all funcitons of the flesh. Which the mind controls.

But wait!! There is more!!

By saying that curing the disease of the mind, such as schizophrenia, anxiety problems, personality disorders, or paranoia, is a mind-over-matter thing.

These are diseases of the mind.

So if a healthy mind is needed, then the person of psychiatric ills can't cure himself or herself, coz his or her mind is not well.

So if you have both of your arms broken, how can you put either one in a sling?

Or... since all of us has only one mind, which, as you say, ought to cure itself, a diseased mind, you are saying that a man or a woman with a broken arm, and that's his only arm, the other is smissing, is supposed to be able to put his broken arm in a sling expertly, and cure its own broken bones.

MsHarmony, this is not good thinking in my opinion.

On three major counts.

------

Please explain how you think a disease of the mind is essentially a disease of the flesh, and how a broken mind is supposed to cure itself by itself and with no outside help, be the outside help a sugar pill or a psychiatric care, or some chemical drugs, or any number of them combined.

------

this is the topic of this thread: Can you change someone else's opinoin by reading these threads.

This is the second time when it has come up that I caught you on your reasoning, which gave you an opinion which is opposite to mine, and the first time I could not change your mind despite I only used the elements of your opinion and reasoning, and rearranged them so, that they would show without any doubt that you formed the wrong opinion. A that time I could not change your mind, despite your being (logically only) clearly wrong.

Now is the second time. Will a broken mind cure itself, can it? According to your opinion, it can; I just showed how it can't, using only the elements of your own very reasoning.

Will I change your mind or opinion this time? this is the million dollar question.

So now I asked you to defend how you imagine your opinion is sensible. I do this to force you to admit your opinion is wrong. But will you. That is the billion dollar question. Because the first time around you tried to backpedal, and use all kinds of reasons to wriggle out of the thing, but you could not.

------

Please don't misunderstand me, MsHarmony, I still like you, and like you a lot; I like the way you stand up for what you say and that you still permit yourself to have fun, after what must have been a lifetime of mainly unfairly allotted hardships to you.

I respect and like you, and here we have a difference of opinions on one particular subject, that's it. It's not that I hate you or want you ill because of this difference. This is all friendly debate to me, I don't have the urge at all to become disruptive, or throw expletives. Not at all. I like you, very much, but still, it does not change the fact that I want you to change your opinion on mental diseases, their origin, cause, treatment, and prognosis, and how those fit all together.

Actually; these forums are an education in itself. Some of the discussions truly do fascinate me and I do learn new things; especially about myself. It gives me something to think about. I also found there are some pretty outdated concepts that people still follow and find it hard to wrap my head around that as its 2012 and not 1950 but to each their own. As I have heard many a time "Opinions are like a**holes; everyone has one. bigsmile

I have changed my opinions on subjects because of things I have read here. It's happened a few times.

Hmm, I can't say I have changed my opinions on something I read here on the forums. Oh, its great to see things from a different angle but that doesn't change my opinion. I also am not here to change someone's opinion but will explain why I don't agree with their opinion. Its just my thoughts and nothing else. I also have learned that I chose wisely not to date or get in anymore relationships as I see lots of people on here going through so much crap with the opposite sex. I can clearly see that for me it would be a waste of time to try. However; I am so thankful for the friends that I have met here on the forums; you are the best!!!

Do not ask, "Did my opinion change your Mind?"

rather you might inquire,

"Did my mind change your opinion?"

I like that....has a JFK ring to it.

Ask not what the opinion can do for your mind...but what your mind can do for the opinion!

Yes...i like that alot....it works!

I wouldn't say I 'grew' from being on here. I just see a lot of different opinions from different people. At most, it's interesting and entertaining.
