I'm actually surprised by all the comments asking if he was drafted. Is a mother not allowed to be upset that her son is being deployed? Is anyone not allowed to be upset, because someone decided to join the military and gets deployed?

Being upset is fine and natural. I have a problem with her blaming America. Her son made a choice. America has nothing to do with his decision. Does she expecting he should just get paid by the government but never get deployed? I took the AFOQT when I was in college because I considered being an engineer in the airforce. I met lots of recruits who were there getting their physical or what not. Most were excited. Some this was their Second deployment and they had reenlisted. Some people just like it. You can be scared for him sure, but respect and be proud of his decision.

I have a nephew who I am very close to and very, very proud of...He ROTC'd through college and when he graduated of course he was deployed, yes with rank, but still deployed..He is not only a sole survivor, he is an only child...My brother and sister-in-law worried, but never questioned his decision to enter into the ROTC program, they just supported it and him....He served his four years proudly and came out with his loyalty and patriotism to country intact and a debt free education (a Masters in Business)...I cannot speak for anyone but myself, but in my eyes he is a shinning example (just one of many young men and women) of why America is such a great country...

Good to hear he's still safe and alive and doing well. Sadly, that is not always the outcome.

I know Sing, and I was going to mention that, HOW BLESSED WE ARE TO HAVE HIM HOME, I didn't do it out of respect to Ruth...She has enough on her mind right now....

And THANK YOU for saying about him being safe and alive.....Means an awful lot to me!flowerforyou

Overwhelmingly, kids who enlist are not in a financial position to offer themselves high level educations... They MUST enlist if they're ever going to get somewhat ahead in life. Rich family kids enjoy the luxury of not enlisting and becoming lawyers who then run for office and dictate the war or peace path.

A flawed process IMO.

I have more respect for Prince Harry than your last 3 Presidents COMBINED! if the politicians want war, their kids MUST go first IMO! drinker

Sorry Ruth! I didn't mean to rant... I will shaddap now flowerforyou

I think it's more that they are led to believe they won't get anywhere in life without enlisting. I know several people in the military who are very smart and would have done just fine without joining.

I also know many people who are not rich who didn't enlist in the military and did just fine as well. It's certainly not only rich kids who are going to college.

SMS flowerforyou I said "high level" education... I'm sure you'll agree, the scholarship programs are the only way for real poor kids to attend quality Colleges/Universities.

I'm done here... Thx

I'm talking about "high level" education as well. Definitely not just a rich kid thing. Scholarships are great, as are grants. Many people also work full time while going to school so they can afford it. Then there's financial aid, which many use as well. So there are lots of options if you really want to make it work. The military is definitely not the only way to get anywhere in life if you aren't rich.

We are and have been in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, the Philipeans, Africa, the Middle East, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Herzogovina, Somalia, South Africa, Panama, Grenada, Nicaragua, all covert operations to dominate world politics. WE ARE AN EMPIRE,HELLO!

So, if the US is an empire, of the countries listed, which has a Governer sent by Washington to oversee the collection of taxes and raw materials? Which of the countries listed have no military and are policed by US units? Which of the countries listed answer to the US consitution and judicial system? I can't seem to find a map of the Empire of the United States of America.
Empire of the USA MAP??? No wonder Americans are oblivious.

Congratulations. By misunderstanding my point you proved your own. drinker

i tried not to post on this

i would ask many of you to walk a mile in a US Marine's boots before you comment, but i know for a fact, many of you wouldn't be able to even lace a pair. marines are indeed the first to go, but they are prepared. the training a recruit endures is to ensure he is fully able to do his job and then some, or he is not allowed to be part of this elite force. he will do everything he is told to, to the best of his ability and trust that the marine by his side (no race, color, or creed, just another marine) will do the same, thus ensuring the safety of the entire united states of america

it is difficult to think of anyone's son or daughter to be off in a foreign land doing what most of us will never or could ever do. it's torture when that son or daughter is your own. yet because of their commitment, we all are free to post on a dating website whatever we feel like posting

many of these sons and daughters will return state side on their own power, few will come home in a body bag. either way, i pray that after the sacrifice that they have made, that they return to get the respect that they have earned

ruth, i thank you from the bottom of my heart. it seems some of us may not understand what your son has, is, and will do for us all. maybe some, one day, will

i hope, if the time comes, he is issued ammunition and allowed to do his job. godspeed to him and all his fellow marines, bulldog

Not really, I prefer direct dialogue over satires or semantics. If one does not know or understand that our nation is indeed an empire, you have no point. Our Emperor? Multinational corporations, media and the military industrial complex.

On 9/11/2001 I was the mother of two sons, ages 6 and 8. I distinctly remember thinking that it would be my worst nightmare come true if one day they had to fight in this war that had been started (by our own leaders....but I'll leave that alone for now). Today I got the text message that my oldest, who is my step-son, would be deployed. So, my worst nightmare has come true. I hate this ******** war, I hate these ******** fake "leaders" running our country. In fact, right now I hate this country. I have no hope left for us and, quite frankly, I think we deserve whatever we get for having our heads so far up our ***** that we allowed this happen. I will not vote this year. I will not participate in this farce of a government. We are now going to get what we deserve for buying into the never ending stream of crap that we have chosen to believe. Hope and change my ***. Our government, both Republicans and Democrats will laugh all the way to the bank while we cry for our dead sons and daughters. Good job, America.

I read very little of this.....

This response is for Baby Ruth alone.

I feel what you feel. I have tried to talk everyone out of wartime enlistment.

We do what we feel is right.

I got your back Darling.

Hope for the best.....expect the worst.

Soufie and myself are here for you.

Love you.

If a draft of me ever occurs, I will dodge it. I will be spending my time in prison instead of fighting for a country who does not value individual life. No way am I fighting for the elite.

Thank you for your support. And, Soufie has been there for me through thick and thin (even if she does remove some of my comments) flowerforyou

Ese, just to make sure there is no misunderstanding, I am not mad at the Marines nor do I lack love for those who would lay down their life to protect mine. I have told SojournSoul how grateful I am to his service and I will say likewise to you. Just as I am to my brother-in-law who did 2 years in Afghanistan. My rant is not against the military or our soldiers. It is against our government and the people who continue to buy into the lie of these wars. If you are one of those who believes in what our government tells us about the necessity of these wars then, yes, you are part of the problem. But, that in no way translates into me disrespecting your previous service o this country. I hope you can understand that.

Depends where you live. There are loans, grants, financial aid. Not all good schools are expensive. LSU was only like $2500 a semester when I went there. I transfer to a smaller college that was like $1600 a semester. I got a quality education. I know Louisiana has statewide scholarship programs that just about anyone can get very easily.

Were you wearing Buckskin underwear at the time? laugh

Total for a LSU 4 year program>>> $138 000 + $500 a semester for books etc.
