i would carefully craft an ambiguous compliment that won't compromise my genuine niceness but it wouldn't be a lie either. something like, "thank you. and you look more fabulous than i imagined!"

It would probably be something like this.
"Aw thanks. So what you been up to lately?" By showing interest in how they are doing and getting them to talk would likely allow the conversation to pass through a progression that wouldn't compromise your honesty or leave them dwelling on the "How come they didn't compliment me in return?" |
