we are free to be insulting
free to be degrading
free to be nearly naked
free to sleep with whatever 'consenting' adult we choose to
free to do many more things than what we are 'restricted' from doing,,

there was a time when laws were enforced by PEACE OFFICERS. it seems those days are gone. now LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS are enforcing laws that don't keep peace. used to be anyone could travel anywhere in the continental united states without being stopped and asked to identify themselves, now stopping citizens and asking them to submit to questioning and checking id's without probable cause is common. requiring permits, and fining citizens to create revenue for the city, county, or state takes priority over street patrol. laws used to be in place to protect you from me and me from you. now some laws are in place to protect people from themselves

Red! flowerforyou

Bulldog nailed it here! And it's not only in America. Things have changed

It wasn't so long ago, watching my nephew grow up with his friends. ya know, racing on their scooters... all day long?

Now they're all adults... and police officers(not my nephew). They're still racing alright... but now they're racing each other in squad cars... They harass the locals, cut you off through traffic... no joke! It's like these punks are getting even.... 24yr old police officers that have no problem smoking joints and getting trashed at parties right after their shifts. I was shocked when I heard they even text their buddies to warn about planned alcohol roadblocks.

I guess it depends on the areas. Some cops are "by the book" and others are "by their own book" I'd love to get off "the grid" one day.

Still better than Singapore yes? laugh

Ptoooey, John! :)

Yeah, Singapore is pretty strict with their laws too. I remember the first time I went there and my friend told me not to bring gum. Hahaha!

No judgement from me. The title came from the video, which we just found today and watched. It made me wonder what your opinion of this is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2DiathA-_Es

Have you seen it too? What do you think? Watched it. Makes me think that most decisions should be thought through and individuals need to take more responsibility for their choices but even this can be risky for some people who want to believe what they want to believe be damn who has to cover the cost of their choices.

How much of it is True? False?

Sadly there is truth in many of theses stories. But if we take a cernal of truth and apply it as gosphel for every similiar situation then what started out a truth gets bastardized to a lie.

Were these really based on facts? Some are. Some not.

Or were all exaggerations? I thend to think by the sum of the total most are missing the point of the regualtion in the first place.

Do you agree with the laws?

Some I actually do. For obvious saftey reasons I think children selling anything without immediate and constant adult supervion should be illegal. Depending what they are selling and how long even that is limited.

Selling anything consumable should be restricted to certain reasonable guidelines. If you have never seen the tradgic results of food born illness and the catestrophic medical debts that generally fall on the tax payers back you would feel much differently.

I feel the absolute power of the government to control the use of the land is extreem. But until you see your property values collasp because someone puts a pig farm up wind of you and or build in such a way you are flooded, and various other problems one property owner can wreck on another you would feel differently.

What has happen is too often knee jerk legislation is written at the expense of all or those least able to defend themself.

Do you think it's unnecessary? Some good laws definitely need fine tuneing and a lot of out of date or not up to date laws need abolished or re-written.

"Land of the free"

The rest of the world is laughing. Apart from the ones that America are killing and trying to destabilize. They don't see the funny side.

Freedom is an illusion to keep the sheep in their pen.

Say what you like....ya'll ain't wrong.

Then again...I am fortunate as hell to be in this jacked up country. We ain't perfect....far from it. I ain't heard of a perfect country yet.

I love America. This country let's me be the man I wanna be without asking for permission. When I get in my car and move 2,000+ miles to be with my Mingle b*tch at the end of the month, ain't no one will try to stop me. As long as I do follow the basics...don't drive stupid....I can do whatever the hell I want.

(I live outside of city limits so, alot of the petty crap that city dwellers put up with...don't apply to those of us who don't want city councils or neighborhood organizations telling us wha we can or cannot do . That is city people's deciscions to do what others say)

We got no building codes or leash laws. We cross the road anywhere we want. I can legally pee in my yard. I dig it and our cops and deputees are really good guys and gals.

The one dumb law we got....livestock has the right of way on all roads except for highways and interstates....yield to the cows.

I hit a cow in a '32 Frazier Nash convertable roadster on a blind S curve just down the road........cow had the right of way so insurance wouldn't touch it. (the cow was just bruised and scared...did major daage to that car though)

Sorry about the cow and your car...I prefer to live in rural/county areas too. Just too many laws and restrictions and city codesin the suburbs and urban areas.

It's Fox News...Based off that, it is over exaggerated.

I can't stand their idea of news journalism, it is as screwed up as watching Alice in Wonderland with Lucy. Did you know that they have been proven to of lied in live broadcast on multiple occasions? Or that they have a history of misleading the public by contorting the truth, it is dirty journalism.

Don't believe **** you hear on the news, especially coming from Fox.

In the video, there's a part where small girls were told to stop selling Lemonade in front of their houses, because it's illegal to do so, etc. The cops went to their houses and told this to the kids.

A number of people got arrested by cops for taking a video of what the cops were doing in front of them...and so on.

Some claim that there are too many obscure laws and decent people-- entrepreneurs-- are being thrown in jail for just selling lobsters, milk or chickens.

One guy was thrown out of his own property even after he won the lawsuit against the government.

One will be fined thousands of dollars for having a type of tree in his yard. A tree that is prolific in his area, if I remember correctly.

laugh: laugh
Selling goods that are consumed by people and are prone to rotting are regulated. Only those establishments that have the readiness to keep things fresh and unrotted can get a permit to sell chicken, lobster, etc.

-- I agree with this law. Much more food poisoning cases would come up to the courts. Huge lawsuits could be generated. If people died of poisoned (even if unintentionally poisoned) food, all hell would break loose. Givign the nice name "entrepeneur" to the seller of perishable food items is not a cause for vindication house-to-house selling.

-- in case of the kids selling lemonade: A cop is required by law and his oath to investigate and report crime, (and to use his discretion in prioritizing his activities.) Selling perishables while not licenced, is a crime. It would be ardorous to make all the exceptions that could be made. There is the issue in law, how detailed the law wants to discriminate the incriminables from the non-incriminables. It all boils down to saving money in drawing up laws that are easier to use than harder.

-- most cops will overlook a couple of kids selling lemonaide, but if their day is slow, they will bust the kids. They have to prioritize, and if there is no crime at that time more important to solve or make an arrest, then the pigs will go after the kids, they are mandated to do so -- both the kids and the cops.

----------

"One guy was thrown out of his own property even after he won the lawsuit against the government."

Okay, not enough information given. He won a lawsuit against the government (there are at least three levels of gov - which you mean?) (and you don't say if he was thrown out for the same reason that generated a suit -- if it was the same reason, what was the suit for? Without that I can neither agree with your consternation nor disagree. I am not going to watch the video.)

-----------

The tree in the yard -- could it have been of the type that houses the asian horned beetle, or the like? Or could it have been planted over a water line or sewage line? Was the tree too close to his house, or to the neighbour's house? or was this an area of severe water shortages, and tree presented a fire hazard, or a danger to wildlife and flora, because it would suck up too much environmental water?

Without details, again, you are not making it clear what we must decide.

--------------

What I see is that the show was aimed at viewers who have little critical ability, who have only a rudimentary sense of reality, and who are not familiar with the extent and breadth of the complexity of today's living in society, and which complex system must be regulated, in order for all of us to get along nicely.

Thanks Wux, I havent watched the video and dont think I need to now.
Most of our laws are made to protect us from something, yep sometimes they might not seem right , but hey nobody is perfect. Its always easier to look at the great job that is done.

I believe it would be pointless to discuss something that you didn't watch, when the questions I asked were based entirely on the video.

I don't live in the US, which is why I asked for opinions of those who do. I never said anything negative at all in my OP.

I know that media can and will exaggerate for the sake of ratings, and some are of less repute than others. Nevertheless, the one I saw was from Fox and I was only asking to what extent were true, because distorted or not, they sometimes do have a basis.

I know that laws are there for a reason. It would be idiotic to assume otherwise. But I was not questioning the law in its entirety, if you understood my queries.

I was merely curious as to who have seen the video and what they thought about it. Nothing more, nothing less.

To those who actually answered my questions, thank you for your opinions. I appreciate it. :)

Perhaps, but as a former police officer and a current employee in the crime prevention business, I can say....it's true.
