Sarcasm’s Beauty

“I was lonely tonight”
“That was your fault”
I smiled
“Oh nothing to say?”
She had this way
of taking what I say
and twisting it
just enough to remind me
that sarcasm could be one
of the most beautiful things in the world

“I miss you”
“Do you? I mean you’re not here so I wouldn’t really know”
“I’m not there because you pissed me off”
“That’s because I’m not perfect”
“I didn’t ask you to be”
“And I apologized”

Silence . . . “Well?”
“What?”
She asked if I had forgiven her
but what she didn’t know
was that I spent the last two weeks
holding her picture
caressing our memories
torturing myself
because I wanted to say yes I had
but I was too egotistical
too petty
to understand that she had done the same as I had
only she forgave me immediately
she explained then that
sometimes
the only way to overcome hurt
is to remember who we love
not who hurt us
even if they are the same person

“Yes”
I could hear her crying . . . “Thank you baby
