I've heard people say that artist can't get rich, they just get enough to live by. Can someone tell me, if it's true or not. I'm an artist, i work with oil colours. How can i get a good gallery to represent me in the USA.

Artists can make lots of money (ala Eric Fischl). They just have to produce art that people want to buy!

How can i get a good gallery to represent me in the USA. I know a number of artists who make a very nice living from their art. You have to figure out your market and your method of display/distribution for yourself. It's as individual as your art should be.

People buy art that they like. If you're making stuff that nobody likes you're not going to make any money.

Take my word for it....it ain't a matter of talent....it is who you know. Talent is nice....but plenty of great artists have died pennyless. No talent hacks like Worhol and Bob Dylan get a good write up by some clueless idiot and thier fortune is made. If you love art...just do it....fame and fortune will come or it won't. The market you are in will largely dictate your economic viability....to a point. Beyond that, you gotta kiss a whole lotta butts if you want success. I didn't write the rules.

Art and artists differ so much. I think the true artist is driven irregardless of money. If producing sellable art is going to kill your artistic creations, is it worth it?

I'm an artist and ... its nothing you can "get rich" doing. These artists who paint hideous abstract art and seem to sell them for ridiculous amounts of money have me puzzled. I suspect it is who you know and who you are that has a lot to do with it. I also suspect it is an elaborate scam involving money laundering. But I do know some good artists that do make good money. There is this one who basically paints cups and saucers and sells her work on ebay. Eventually she and her husband started their own auction website that only sells original art. I have sold a few small paintings from there, but not for a lot of money. If you have collectors that like your work you can sell a lot. Galleries are finding it difficult to compete with on line art galleries and artists are selling direct to the buyers now via the Internet. That is the way to go. Get an art blog. I think that expecting returns from the art you are doing is a wrong attitude. I used to think that way, things I am good at like songwriting or making photos.. then I constantly had conflicts with what I think is art and what others want to see/hear. a lot of times it has more to do with connections and compromising really. if you want to make "art" that everyone wants, then you are more like a businessman instead of a real artist. thats why lots of famous musicians/bands still have their side projects going on besides their major records i think.

Just about every avenue of art is the same aside from maybe music; but painting, sketching, journalism...All of that **** is about who you know. I've made maybe a grand collectively over the course of at least 10 years.

Exposure. Get your name out there. Don't compromise your art. And find an agent that doesn't suck and actually likes your work (this is where knowing when someone is overtly lying to you comes in very handy). Also, I've never made any money off of anything artistic, so you may not want to listen to me.
