Can we change our neural pathways ? Yes. The brain does not recognise the difference between visualisation & real experience. If you were to overcome thinking that you dont want, (a fear or negative thoughts), you visualise overcoming & think the opposite. Do you think that would work for my needle-phobic? |

Definitly. I was phobic of needles, One time I blacked out for hours and it took many docs & nurses to hold me down, I was a child, lol. I remember retraining my brain, although I did not know what neural pathways were then. People do it all the time :-)

I just dislike being around them. No wait, I abhor being around them.
How do I retrain? I've been stabbed a couple of times and yet needle pain is the worst pain I feel...very sensitive to needles. |

First you face the anxiety by imagining needles. Do this daily until the anxiety is minimal. Then imagine having the needle next to your skin daily until the anxiety is minimal. Move up the imagery till you have no anxiety seeing yourself getting needled.

Do you actively watch them while you are getting a shot, or do you distract yourself? For most people, it is the lead up to the moment and not the moment itself that is what causes the trouble. |

I am too poor. I can barely pay for beer, cigarettes and hookers with my food stamps.
and you want me to pay attention!!!! |

Depends on how much it's going to cost me...I don't buy trash.
I pay attention to bargains |

I am actually trained to pay attention to people, the hard thing is shutting it off. I just came from a bookstore, there was a clerk I had not seen in a couple months, don't know her name or anything, but a quick memory scan: last time she had a cast on her foot, broke it stepping off a SPETA bus in the rain. I repeated by rote- I think I scared her.

I pay attention to some things, but it's weird how the filing cabinet in my brain works sometimes. I'm sure the memories are all there.... I just can't find the right file sometimes

I always pay attention when someone is counting back my change or I am giving them money.

I have tunnel vision.... you have to be in a rodeo clown outfit and such for me to remember.

Why do you suppose the conscious mind clings to some information and passes other information off to the subconscious? I find it curious that in RT I often dont consciously remember little details about what someone wore or what color their hair or eyes were,,but I will remember things that people say,,, in these threads as well, there are probably many posters who I barely remember after I read their post,,but there are others whose 'character' seems to become crystal clear to me after taking notice of several of their posts and putting together their 'back story' from details they have shared,,, which things do you find you pay attention to and which things seem to slip your mind much more easily? i try to but sometimes..........boobs! |

I can't watch but I certainly can feel it when it happens. Ladywind had some good points to try. |

Our minds work as a novelty filter. New experiences, whether they are ideas, art, sounds, smells, feelings or tastes, cause new neural pathways to form which had never existed previously in our brains. Repeated exposures reinforce existing pathways and are not as vivid as completely new impressions. We are excited and highly stimulated by new experiences of every sort and they leave a fresh and more potent initial impression. Those we meet online like those we meet in real life who are capable of inspiring tendrils of new growth stimulate us in a powerful way which cannot be resisted. Some people become slightly uncomfortable with a preponderance of new data to process while others get very excited and there are all other levels of reaction in between. It is interesting how we learn. Wow. I'm impressed! You are dead on with this. I got my degree in Biobehavioral Psychology and couldn't have expressed it any clearer. The way in which we learn, how our brain's structure and function contributes to our behavior is really quite remarkable. We're just now starting to understand the depth of how it all works. Such an interesting field! |
