"I wasn't worried about freedom. I was worried about people being turned into morons by TV."
-- Ray Bradbury in 2001 talking about his book Fahrenheit 451
Is television actually making us stupid? After all, this is a device nicknamed"the boob tube" and "the idiot box." Television was once famously called the "vast wasteland,"a moniker that has stuck since it was spoken. Can we look to television to show us the status of society? Does TV reflect the nation's intellectual capacity and contribute to its decline at the same time?

Personally, I think TV is one of the worst things that has ever happened to our country. It aims for the lowest common denominator, and then it keeps lowering it.

What do you think? Does the quality of what's on offer reflect the culture as it is now, or does it manipulate it?

I think it takes a very small part of the shallowest urban culture and exaggerates that into being the norm for everyone. But it's not all about the culture. The other evil of TV is the way advertisers control it, the content and the format of the programs and of course the seductiveness of the commercials themselves. The visual nature of television was a pure gift to the business world. We've gotten so used to being manipulated we don't even seem to mind it any more.

Advertising and modern culture are inextricably linked don't you think? Advertisers manipulate popular culture to increase sales and create trends. So, I don't really see a separation between the two.

Wasn't too worried as he had his own show on where? Oh yeah, TV.

THAT is a cogent point! laugh

Yes I certainly do think so. The separation is just that they're not the SAME thing, that's all.

Ironically, last night Nova (one of the few really intelligent shows on TV) had a special on what happened with hurricane Sandy. It wasn't stated specifically, but much of the focus was on the incredible number of people who were warned, but stayed in the storm, near the coast, and sometimes died. Many had no provisions. Even in this world of mass instant communications, they didn't listen.

Rupert Murdoch’s Twentieth Century Fox corporation has admitted to plantingpolitical brainwashing withinits globally popular TV shows and indeedboasts that it is proud of the fact.
A corporate video currently being showcased on another part of Murdoch’s media empire, MySpace.com, showsFox executives and stars of its universally recognized shows bragging about howthey use the platform of hit shows that are broadcast globally toimplant messages about the supposed threat of global warming.
This is not the first time Fox have been enthusiastic in propagandizing for the establishment. In 2003, Rupert Murdoch himself admitted that the corporation had “tried” to help the Bush administration sell the war in Iraq.
The text accompanying the video states, “In 2006, News Corp. embarked upon a company wide initiative to reduce the size of its carbonfootprint.”
The means by which this “initiative” was carried out is then made clear by a plethora of clips from Fox’s most popular shows – the Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, Prison Break – whichare all loaded with messages about global warming and the need to do something about it.
“What could we do on a practical level to start making a difference,” asks oneexecutive before another answers, “The biggest thing we’ve done is inserting messages about the environment into some of our content.”
In other words, Fox has embarked on a deliberate campaign, which could only have beendone with the coordination of the script writers of eachprogram, to force people to accept the pseudo-science of global warming by brainwashing them into accepting it as areality. This has beenachieved by weavingin messages about climate change and having popular characters in the TV shows embrace specific tenants of the global warming manifesto.

One would have to be a moron to immediately believe what you have said, because you provide no evidence to back up anything that you have said.
one should do ones own research, if someone posts something without anything to back it up, that does not mean it has no validity. You dont need them to provide evidence, if you dont believe something posted, disprove it yourself. If not, keep it moving.

That is because in the past, with hurricane Irene, they were also warned and Irene did not reach them. They did not believe the warnings.

When the government lies to the people over and over and they terrorize them with stories of terrorists that don't exist, eventually people stop listening to them.

Just like the boy who cried wolf.

When I was a child we were told that in the event of a nuclear attack we were to hid under our desks. That's laughable.

Then when threats of dirty bombs were being spread about we were told to buy duck tape for the windows.

Its no wonder no one listens to the government for crap sake.

So now, that finally they predicted something accurately they are driving home the message: DO WHAT YOUR GOVERNMENT TELLS YOU OR ELSE.

Give me a break.

You don't think there is any difference between the Administration and the National Weather Service? The path of the hurricane was actually predicted first by the European Weather Service.

It was not me that needed to be convinced. It was a bunch of crazy New Yorkers. My response was the result of watching some television interviews given to the people who did not evacuate. They didn't take the warnings seriously because the weather service was wrong about Irene.

So,if they weren't lying, they could predict the Path of a Hurricane with 100%accuracy?
But they don't,because they are lying to the people?

When Hurricane Andrew hit the Bahamas in '92,the Eye was predicted to pass straight over New Providence Island, but early that morning it shifted just enough to tear the Heck out of Eleuthera instead!

It's pretty much a crap shoot. But if you want to know why people did not evacuate you may have to interview each and everyone of them.

All I was saying is that the people I saw interviewed stated that they have been warned about hurricane Irene and it did not hit them. So they just decided this was probably another false alarm.

With today's weather technology and with the accuracy with which they predicted Sandy's path this time, with two different computer systems, perhaps people will start paying more attention.

I have seen a media trend recently where reporting the news seems to be improving, but it is still wise to cross check the news with alternative news and look at many different reports.

With the communications we have access to these days, the truth is not so easy to hide.

Hell, the director of the CIA couldn't even get away with an affair! LOL

TV can be a postive tool to use, and then it can be negative, just like many other things people get too involved in like some Sports and other things people enjoy. I like TV and do not want to live in the dark ages where they had No TV.

so, is media a representation of the culture that buys it?

or is the culture that buys it being manipulated by the media?

or is the truth actually something in the middle?

The truth will always be easy to hide; to use for blackmail/extortion purposes on the people the "controllers" want to control.

That CIA director, could probably get away with a thousand affairs...until his handlers decided to take him down.

It happened to Eliot Spitzer too; he was a basically good man working in the public interest and against the interests of the people who really run things.

I suspect that the "halls of power" are chock full of pedophiles and similar creatures for the simple reason that they would be especially "good" at doing what they're told.
