I am completely baffled by this. If this happened to my kid I would find that state inspector and punch him or her in the mouth, this is yet one more display of the arrogance of government thinking they know more than their boss. What is your take on this?
A Hoke County preschooler was fed chicken nuggets for lunch because a state worker felt that her homemade lunch did not have enough nutritional value, according to a report by the Carolina Journal. The West Hoke Elementary School student was in her More at Four classroom when a state agent who was inspecting lunch boxes decided that her packed lunch — which consisted of a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, apple juice and potato chips — “did not meet U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines,” the Journal reports. The decision was made under consideration of a regulation put in place by the the Division of Child Development and Early Education at the Department of Health and Human Services, which requires all lunches served in pre-kindergarten programs to meet USDA guidelines. “When home-packed lunches do not include all of the required items, child care providers must supplement them with the missing ones,” the Journal reports. The student’s mother told the Journal Here's the kicker "she received a note from the school about the incident and was charged $1.25 for the cafeteria tray" , from which her daughter only ate three chicken nuggets. The note explained how students who did not bring “healthy lunches” would be offered the missing portions and that parents could be charged for the cost of the cafeteria food, the Journal reports. The mother, who was not identified in the report, expressed concern about school officials telling her daughter that she wasn’t “packing her lunch box properly.” http://www.foxnews.com/us/2012/02/14/preschoolers-homemade-lunch-replaced-with-nuggets/?test=latestnews#ixzz1mUcmpoeg |

The purpose of government schools has always been to supplant the role of the parents in developing the child's mind. This is the Prussian system, adopted in this country in the early 20th century. John Taylor Gatto, an award-winning teacher, has written extensively on this. Check out johntaylorgatto.com for lots of free literature. I would never put a child in a government school.

Chicken nuggets are NOT healthy! And its probably only 40-50% mechanically separated chicken, mechanically separated from mechanically separated chicken and the rest is cardboard, saw dust, and breading. |

McClatchy News Service
RAEFORD - School and state officials say a misunderstanding resulted in a West Hoke Elementary School preschooler's homemade lunch being replaced with chicken nuggets. An agent from the Department of Health and Human Services' Division of Child Development and Early Education was at the school Jan. 30 assessing the pre-kindergarten program, said Bob Barnes, assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction for Hoke County schools. The agent examined the lunches for the six students in the class and believed one did not meet nutritional requirements spelled out by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Barnes said. According to the USDA, schools are required to provide lunches that include one serving of meat, one serving of milk, one serving of grain and two servings of fruit or vegetables, even if the lunches are brought from home. The 4-year-old, whose name was not released, brought a turkey and cheese sandwich, a banana, potato chips and apple juice. Guess processed breaded "chicken" is healthier than than this, also I would like to know when turkey stopped being considered meat? The Department of Health and Human Services declined to say which requirement was not provided in the child's lunch. The girl thought she had to go through the lunch line for a new meal, Barnes said. The Department of Health and Human Services said in a statement that it is investigating. In the statement, the department denies that its employee inspected the lunch and denies instructing "any child to replace or remove any meal items." Typically, if a teacher sees a student with a lunch that does not meet the nutritional requirements, he or she will offer the child the missing components free of charge, Barnes said. In this instance, Barnes said, the girl misunderstood her instructor and believed she had to get a new lunch rather than receive an additional element. "We are not the lunch bag police," Barnes said. "We would never put a child in any type of embarrassing situation. But we are responsible to see that every child gets a nutritious meal." Barnes said it was not the job of the school system to assess the meal a parent provides, but rather to provide optional nutritional supplements. The girl's mother complained to state Rep. G.L. Pridgen, who represents Hoke, Robeson and Scotland counties. Pridgen said he plans to investigate the incident further. "Where does the parents' rights end and the state's begin?" Pridgen asked. "The girl's lunch, there was nothing wrong with it. I would like to see how many children get such a good meal. I think sometimes the government reaches too far." The story gained national attention with coverage on Rush Limbaugh's morning radio talk show, in the John Locke Foundation's publication, Carolina Journal, and in the Civitas Institute. |
