Topic: Where did these acronyms come from?

I'm probably the only one that actually thinks about these things, but I wonder exactly where some of the internet and texting acronyms came from. Lol, I can see I suppose. But.. rofl? Really, nobody actually rolls around on the floor laughing. Wait, do they? Brb.. That one I can see too. Hb.. nobody ever really says hurry back. I just wonder who was the first person to actually start internet acronyms.

I have no idea where they started, but I am fine with all of those, I can accept them... it is the really obnoxious ones that bother me. Such as: bak cmiw dnbl8 hth ltnt and all the other assorted ones out there that are appearing everywhere. TTYL.

I rarely use acronyms or shorthand, for goodness knows what reason.

Actually, I pondered this myself like last year. Found this retarded story of some internet chat room, eh, frequents? Not sure the best word for them; anyway.. Apparently, there was a couple amidst the mix of like 200 some people in one chat room. So they started shorting it so they were able to actually read each other without having to scroll up and deal with the bar always moving cause of people always posting.. There little code dialect soon caught on; and it became a major fade in chat rooms.. However, we as Americans, love acronyms (cue sarcasm) Navy. Army. National Guard. Government. USDA. Science. etc.. They've been using acronyms since like.. the dawn of time. So, now that I've just totally bs and guessed.. WCPSIMR? :D
