Topic: The True Meaning of "LOL" | |

It also helps set the text mood for the person reading it.

It could, after all, stand for Lots of Luck. LOL!!

I was like you...I was always thinking about why it is sometimes tacked onto a sentence before realising that it’s used like a ‘cure all’ for a multitude of different ‘jocular’ emotions/feelings – don’t know if that makes sense....
I know that I tend to use it as a panacea to soften the implication of something that I’ve typed... |

I am fairly sure many folks beleive 'LOL' is the new comma. Or at least some sort of punctuation mark. That made me LOL for real |

So I just got done rolling around on the floor from laughing.
I should probably vacuum. |

I don't mind the use of lol as long as they're not punctuating their sentences with it.

I am a laugher.
But still, have NEVER used LOL for the reason that I don't really laugh out loud when reading things. Ergo, it would not be, for me I guess, honest. |

I know that I tend to use it as a panacea to soften the implication of something that I’ve typed... That makes total sense Just as emoticons can bring a whole new meaning to a piece of text. They are the body language and tone of voice of what would otherwise be cold, emotionless digital communication. |

They are the body language and tone of voice of what would otherwise be cold, emotionless digital communication. That's true...I didn't think of it in that way. It's almost like you're on autopilot when you use emoticons and web/txt acronyms. |

I'm currently reading a book ("Invisible"), where upon "LOL" stands for "Little Old Ladies" but each time I read it I think they mean "laugh out loud" The main character is an elderly woman who always confused it for meaning 'little old ladies' so when she says LOL it is her meaning she is using. |
