Even in today's partisan political climate, you'd think their would be some activities -- like going to the movie theater -- that would transcend party lines. Well, not according to a recent study done by The Hollywood Reporter. In a poll featuring both liberal and conservative voters, 35 percent of Republicans (and 45 percent of tea party members) consider an actor's political position when seeing a film as opposed to 20 percent of Democrats. The study also pinpoints the percentage of people who purposely avoid an actor's movie due to their political preferences.

Stars Republicans Avoid

Sean Penn (52%)
Jane Fonda (48%)
Whoopi Goldberg (47%)

Stars Democrats Avoid

Mel Gibson (36%)
Arnold Schwarzenegger (30%)
Tom Cruise (27%)

While the statistics aren't particularly shocking -- Schwarzenegger, Penn, Fonda and Goldberg are all outspoken about their beliefs -- the study shows that there are two stars who completely transcend political lines: Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon, which is pretty interesting since both are boisterous about their ideologies (Eastwood is Libertarian, Damon is a staunch liberal).

Other findings in the study include the percentage of voters who think America is portrayed well in films (62 percent of Democrats as opposed to 39 percent of Republicans) and the types of movies voters enjoy (Republicans prefer family films, Democrats prefer edgier movies).

You can read the entire study over on THR.

Hmmm. Interesting.

Now I have two favorite Libertarians.

What do you think? Is this important for your film watching what politics the actors have?

After all that Mel Gibson has said/done, is there anyone who actually likes him?

Heck no! A film is just make-believe anyway! I don't care what political affiliation an actor has as long as I'm entertained and they don't use their status to force views.

I try not to judge a person based on what the media reports, they have their own agenda. Besides, what he does with his personal life doesn't directly affect me.

Normally, I'd say the same. However, I can't really respect someone who has anti-semitic rants like him.

I have the same problem but I can watch his movies and most of the time forget his "real" self. I will not spend any money on his movies however because I will not financially support bigotry.

I don't think he did any movies that I liked enough to continue watching.

But yeah, normally, I don't really care what someone is like in real life if they're actors. But, he put all his crap right out there for everyone to see and it's hard to look past.

Between Gibson and Penn, Penn did Fast Times and Colors while Gibson did Mad Max, Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome, Braveheart, The Patriot, Lethal Weapon 2, 1 and 3 in that order and the list goes on.

Reckon its a good thing the vast majority of voters are independent...

all that hate out there...

Be a good thing to limit it to as small a group as possible.

Being an indepentant I could care less about the political asperations of an actor.

When I go to watch a movie I could care less what great buffon plays the part... As long as they play it well and entertain me.

When they start talking politics I turn away...

(after all they DO make a living lieing - JUST like politicians).

yeah,, I tend not to assume or get too deep into what someones personal beliefs might be when they are providing a service (unless its relevant to the service)

for instance, I really dont care if someone is male , female, conserv or lib if they are in entertainment in anyway

I purchase tickets to things that are ENTERTAINING, one actor or actress does not make that distinction for me , there are also plots, directors, cinematography etc,, that play a role in movies

I dont have to like the actor, so long as their performance(fictional) moves me

I dont have to like a singer, as long as their voice, lyrics, music moves me

I dont have to like a heart surgeon, as long as his bedside manner calms me and he is good at his PROFESSION

I have been known to like someone EVEN more because of what I read of their personal life,, but rarely do I STOP liking someones entertainment capacity because of what I 'find out' in papers,,,

for instance, never a big fan of brad pitt or angelina,, so some of what happened with them probably makes me even less likely to go out to see their movies

I love Ben Stiller, Tyler Perry, John Travolta, Denzel Washington,,,and nothing I could read about their personal life would make me stop seeing their products because they are excellent at what they do,,,

,,only time I really have to 'like' someone, is if IM gonna have a personal relationship with them,,,,basically

and then again, I cant think of any person that I know that I actually HATE, let alone celebrities and politicians that I only read about,,,,

Adam and Jackie Sandler, Robert Downey Jr., Hulk Hogan, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Greenwood, Vince Vaughn all Republicans.

Oh yeah, Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay are Republicans who donated the max to Senator John McCain in 2008 as did Adam and Jackie Sandler both to Senator McCain and Rudy Giuliani.

how did the word 'hate' get interjected into such a poll. therein lies the problem with politics in america today. way too much use of the word hate.
