SOMETIMES smart people curse (probably not 'like crazy' though) USUALLY smart people have a vocabulary of too many words to find the desire or need to use the handful of 'funny' or shocking or socially unacceptable ones,,,, here's the difference; you desire to be accepted by society. i could care less about society. the end. |

I don't think people who curse are stupid. I think they are being lazy. I am lazy sometimes and use a curse word. I try not to. And, I definitely don't teach my children to be lazy. I always apologize to them if I use a curse word in front of them.
I tend to use them more if I am in the company of other adults who use curse words a lot. I shouldn't, but it happens. And, now that I'm thinking about it, I will make more of an effort not to do it. |

That's fine. But, you need to respect the wishes of the parent whose child you are taking care of. |

well when you are out in public, or your child is at school and they holler out an obscenity, you probably wont want to be in the principals office everyday cuz you gave your child a potty mouth. Its embarrassing for them and humiliating for the parent.
My kids still think the SH word is Shut up, and he is ten. I also dont let them use that either..its disrespectful. |

I completely agree. If you want someone to pay you to work for them, you are going to need to conform to certain societal standards. I would love to have my nose pierced. In fact, I once did. However, I had to let it close up immediately because it violated the dress code of my employer. So, I had to make a compromise about the way I wanted to look for my job that provides me with a decent living. I may think it's not fair and that I shouldn't have to conform, but that's the way it is. Life isn't fair. It's all about compromise. |

I think the major difference of opinions here stems from the generations gap. Nowadays curse words are used almost everywhere, whereas when I was growing up, you didn't hear them on TV or in public, generally speaking. Swearing has become no more taboo then divorce these days. Times they are a changin', not for the better in my opinion but that's another thread.
As for whether I'd be upset for the "crap" lesson...yes, I probably would. Here's why... Scenario: You teach Jr. to say "I gotta take a crap". Children from birth on learn that actions have consequences, both negative and positive...they repeat things that bring positive ones (laughter, for instance) and tend not to repeat ones that bring negative ones (soap in the mouth, for instance). Fast forward years after Jr. has learned that saying "I gotta take a crap" brings about positive reinforcement...young adult Jr. is at his first big business meeting with a bunch of executives...how do you think they'd react to "Excuse me gentlemen, I gotta take a crap!"? It's harder to unlearn something than it is to learn it. Why make things more difficult for your child than they already are in this complicated world of ours? That's the way this old "respect your elders, respect yourself" chick sees it anyways. |

If i kick the table on accident or something. . i say, oh mother----and i leave the second word out...but i say it in my head. |

My daughters think it is "shut up" as well. About 4 years ago I used to listen to a Kid Rock album in the car a lot. The lyrics to one particular song we all enjoyed on the way to school went: "We were tryin' different things and we were smokin' funny things...." Well, one morning I was standing in line with all the other moms to check our kids into the morning kindergarten class and my 5 year old starts singing this verse nice and loud. Every mom turned to look at me. I was a tad mortified. Now, I don't consider this to be as bad as her blurting out the "F" word, but it is an example of how kids will repeat what they hear at the most inappropriate moments. |

hahaha, my four year like to sing loud and proud, lucky for me she always messes up the lyrics though.
I am not proud of the music i have exposed my kids too though. When my son said his favorite song was --blame it on the al al al al alcohol, by jamie foxx...i was not proud. I dont have any of those albums, its just radio play. |

During the years following my divorce I was very depressed a lot and let my kids watch way too much stuff on TV just to get some peace and quiet. We do the best we can. We make lots of mistakes. But, we love them enough to keep trying to do better. |

The standards they are held by at school and society. I disagree with a lot of standards and requirements but i am not punishing my children for them. When my children are of age, they will find their own path...but for now, its my job to lead them down a responsible path. btw did you hear about the college student who ran off from ucla and join the rebels in libya....sad. |

my heart won't be changing then.
:D i just read an article on the student. he says he was just bored. i'm sure he has more reasons than that. i would like to hear those reasons. |

I think its really insane. I mean not that he is insane, but the whole idea of running off like that and just because you're bored sounds like a wasted excuse...hmmmm |
