I think that a Christian has an obligation to litmus test a candidate. I have 5 no starters.

Abortion
Euthanasia
Embryonic Stem Cell
Cloning
Defence of marriage

A candidates stance on these things matter most.

Here is the rub for me, a christian and an adult. I do realize that people can seperate and actually HAVE to seperate what they may feel and do in their personal life with what they are permitted and expected to do professionally.

So, such a litmus test, would be irrelevant to me.

UNLESS, there was explicitly a record of these candidates PUSHING for such things, which is different from them just saying they think its a personal choice,,,

I also find it hard to imagine a candidate that will agree with every thing I believe or want, so I have to err on the side of looking at things they are likely to have AUTHORITY to affect.

For instance, a candidate that believes lying is wrong is great. BUt it really is irrelevant in terms of their job being they cant make lying illegal (Except contractual or under oath).

The whole abortion issue doesnt hold a lot of weight with me when I vote because I dont see what AUTHORITY the candidate for president, or senator has to change the existing laws one way or the other. If I saw in their record an ATTEMPT to change the laws , it may make more of a difference though.

Bottom line, is all the issues that are important to me are issues that no one person(let alone candidate) is going to agree with 100%, so I have to pick those things I Think they are most likely to have authority over and most likely to take action about.

Things like economy, education, homeland security, etc,,,,

more personal things, like abortion, euthanasia, DOMA, are priorities to me personally, but I dont give them the political priority because the politicians just arent likely to be able to have any IMMEDIATE impact on them and they arent issues that are as broad to me as the others.

For Australians, this site seems to be helpful; however the necessary information on the candidates is only made publically available during the voting periods.

we have such sites too.

But the issue is this

I am PRO LIFE,, I dont agree with ARTIFICIALLY maintaining life that would naturally flicker out(different from saving a life)

I dont agree with snuffing out life in the womb
I dont agree with the death penalty.

these are THREE SEPERATE ISSUES, but lets look at what actual authority a politician has over those issues.

Should politicians make it ILLEGAL for family members to hold on to hope by artificially maintaining it,,,,I dont think so

Should politicians make it illegal to have an abortion...I am on the fence on that one

Shold politicians make it illegal to with malice and aforethought snuff out human life...which is what the death penalty is,, I think so

NOW, what of all the politicians who are running who only agree with one or two of these things?....IS it necessary to wait on a candidate that agrees on all three if there is one who may not agree on all three but still can do good on any number of OTHER issues...

I think its not

Study each candidate, pray, and vote!

Here is a great comparison site. Quite thorough!
