If you are walking and you are a fair distance behind someone and suddenly overtake them, does this mean that they've slowed down or that you've sped up? I know this sounds daft but i have been wondering about it for a while.

From your question it seems you realize this is a two part, or two variable problem. Without knowing the speed or distance/time traveled of either person you cannot solve the problem. It seems all you know is that you overtook the other person.
