'Australian Prime Minister does it again!!This woman should be appointed Queen of the World.. Truer words have never been spoken.
It took a lot of courage for this woman to speak what she had to say for the world to hear. The retribution could be phenomenal, but at least she was willing to take a stand on her and Australia 's beliefs. The whole world needs a leader like this!

clearly host countries have the right to preserve their culture that has evolved over many decades or centuries and immigrants can make a contribution to that evolution - but a contribution is not the same as expecting a host nation and culture to bend to their every whim

Are these muslims Australian citizens? I don't the Australian Constitution, But if that were said in America, it would be every bit as stupid and ignorant a slogan as it was 50 years ago.

The leader of a country, of course, has the legal right to express any stupid, bigoted and ignorant sentiment he wishes. Are you familiar with the first amendment? It applies to people of any religious , ethnic or language proclivity.

There are ideas and there are ideas. I don't know about Australia, but the American Constitution doesn't allow deportation under any of these grounds. The notion that a country belongs only to those legal citizens who have the most popular religion, language and ethnic background is uncontitutional, bigoted and ignorant

I do agree that they need to assimilate. If immigrants can't get along here - they have a problem - the US offers them a lot of civil protection under the law even though they are not citizens, they can practice their religion and speak their native language. Sometimes I think we should have more requirements as far as speaking english

That's correct, but what does that have to do with anything? I didn't notice any mention of illegal immigrants in the original post.

Further, if Australians want to have their government sponsor a particular religion, they can do that. This is not permitted in America. Most Americans know this.

That's not clear. Does this mean that immigrants are not allowed to be citizens in Australia? What does it mean that you are either an Australian or an immigrant? You can't be both?

I think there is a discussion here that does not qualify the status of the immgrants under discussion as legal or not & it's causing confusion

I think for clarity we need to refer to legal immigrants who are non citizens - that is the status I intended in my posts. Or, clarify the status we intend.

Even immigrants who are recent citizens need to assimilate in my opinion as far as law & language as we are still the host country

and the contributions of immigrant populations will always be gradually & gratefully blended into the existing melting pot here - with the expectation that they are now AMERICANS - not spanish, chinese, french or what ever

I do agree it is important to remember that our country was built on the backs of immigrant populations and that I know I would not be here were it not for the large German and Irish migrations

and that many immigrants DO become citizens of this crazy country, bless their hearts

ID say adapting to your host home seems reasonable. I dont think it is constitutional in america to discriminate against muslims though or to enforce any specific religion over another.

It means don't expect Australia to print anything in Arabic, teach in Arabic in public schools etc. Learn the language of the country you moved too, don't expect them to learn yours!

Its responsible to learn the customs and language of the place you are visiting.

They are not forcing a religion. The specifically said we will respect your beliefs if you respect ours. They did say they are a Christian country. They are saying be whatever religion you want to for example don't complain that we have God in our schools. We don't care if you are offended.

That is totally different than making someone conform.

if she is referencing ALL immigrants(including those who have LEGALLY become a part of the country or gained citizenship) , than Id say its FORCING them to accept the God thats in the schools THEY are contributing money to help run,,,,which is forcing them to pay for what they dont agree with just because they are a minority

it is a wrong thing to do to give people citizenship in a country and not give them a say in what goes on or to try to quiet them from speaking up on things they disagree with

I am glad that in america, EVERYONE is given a voice so if something is off balance, there is at least the opportunity to organize and to vote to change it,,, instead of just being told by the government to sit down and shut up

That is flawed logic. By your logic everyone in America is forced to support the wars because their tax dollars pay for them. Guess that means you can't be anti war. Our money says "In God we Trust" and tax dollars pay for money. You don't have to accept everything 100%. I don't see anything wrong with not wanting to change for immigrants. They are just asking to accept the way things are. Feel free to come but don't complain. Obviously if you are moving there you are escaping something worse so count your blessings.
