Topic: Being "nice" to religious people and preachers.. | |
---|---|
Sometimes I feel like "being nice" and polite to people "of faith" as they call themselves. As long as it is a casual encounter politeness and kindness is natural for me. But sometimes this invites them into the notion that you are a person who they might be able draw into their religious notions or cult. Yes, I see it as a cult. Religion is a cult. I feel like sometimes I am too hard on nice people who only claim to be wanting to "share" their beliefs. But the term "sharing" is basically a scam. They really want to "spread" their beliefs. If you have ever heard of Multilevel marketing (MLM) you probably know someone who was quite over-bearing trying to get you to come to one of there "meetings" or "share" their over-priced products with you. (Which you can get cheaper if you sign into their cult--- er I mean into their MLM company.) Don't say "share" when you are trying to sell something. A religion, a product, etc. Be up front about what you are doing. I have found that since the religious are used/accustom to being allowed to falsely feel they are the moral majority. "The upper cut due to their choice of belief". Being "nice" to them perpetuates this misconception they have of their "preachee" position in society. Their undeclared even denied but very obvious feeling of superiority. If on the other hand they are one of the few and far between people who know that their religious belief is theirs alone and is not for others, I don't have to worry about feeding their mental misconceptions. In those cases it is easy to be nice and actually interact with them at a personal level. Since they know that all have a personal voyage to find their own beliefs and none are suppose to be exactly the same, it is refreshing. Again, they are far and few between. |

i agree with both JB and Cowboy here... i can see where certain faiths could/can be considered a cult, but it is not really the sheeps fault, they are being led by the sheepherder. the church used to be a place of worship, and still is in some degree, but when the preacher tells the people to spread the word, i think it is for money reasons more than anything else. not that it is always a bad thing, but certain preachers make all of them look bad. Okay I'm going to ask you the same thing. Explain how "non-belief" (in anything)is a cult. Note: When a person uses the term non-belief, I would like to request what they are talking about that is being non-believed. example (Cowboy is a non-believer in aliens) i can't speak for cowboy, but non belief would be atheists, IMO... everyone believes in something, whether it is magic, ghosts, or aliens coming from a comet... heavens gate, does that ring a bell? charles manson... "cult" is just a label, just a way of classifying peoples and their beliefs... So what you are calling non-belief is not simply non-belief in Jesus but non-belief in any God at all? I believe in God. But I am still called a "non-believer" (In Jesus) because I am NOT a Christian. So when you say Non-belief or Non-believer you need to also state what it is you expect them to believe in to be called a "believer." I am a believer in God. I am a believer in Aliens. I resent Christians calling me a non-believer to my face. They logically can only call me that when speaking about me to people who are in their particular cult. I have a similar take, Im either right or I Am wrong, tht goes for ANYTHING , IF I am right there will be consequences and if I am wrong there will be consequences but what sense to go through life in perpetual uncertainty, I Choose to stand on one belief or another and I will wait it out like everyone else has to to see if it was indeed a belief that ended up being a fact, or a belief that was just a belief never to be realized,,, If I feel certain of something that ends up being true, than it was justified for me to believe my belief as if it was a fact, because it indeed (in the end) was IF I feel certain of something that ends up being untrue, than the egg will be on my face and the consequences also mine to deal with,, |

Truly I don't think there will be any egg on anyone's face. I don't think it matters what path you travel. I think all paths lead to the self that is God... the higher self.... and its higher self and all the way up the ladder to the ultimate self...GOD.

This is the ultimate truth, no matter what road we take, our destination will be the same in the end. The whole "egg on the face" thing is what keeps people tied to their religions. They are so afraid that if they believe the "wrong thing" they will get egg on their face with respect to "God". That's the fear element in action. This is the problem with "jealous God" religions that train people to think that if they choose the "wrong religion" they'll be in big trouble come "judgment day". It makes no sense that any divine creator would work that way. Either "righteousness" is important, or it isn't. It makes no sense to have a God who gets pissed at honest people for believing in the wrong things. This is why the "jealous God" religions clearly have no merit. They are all basically just incarnations of the Zeus mentality. |

Personally, I very rarely talk about my faith.
The only reason I do on the threads here is because someone else is already talking about it and has a misconception of what my faith means to me. They call me a Christian and then proceed to tell me how terrible I am for being a Christian. I try to correct that perception. But otherwise, I rarely talk about my faith. Living my faith is more important and carries more weight than cornering someone into talking about it when they don't want to. Everyone knows I am Christian and I don't have to tell them.... I only talk about it if someone talks to me first. |

I rarely do either. I try to 'spread the word' or at least the message behind it by my behavior. I only do here because there is a FORUM Which includes a THREAD specifically for the topic of religion, or christianity, or whatever. In mainstream life, I just live according to the laws of the land and the basic moral tenet of treating others with respect.

You can take 100 Christians and ask them all the same question, "Do you have faith in yourself or Jesus?" and more often than not you can spot the follower who don't think for themselves when they immediately blurt out 'they have faith in Jesus.' Christianity has been perverted from the original message for so long becasue others let Priests interpret the words in the bible for them. Much of the Bible was written BY Catholics (EG WESTERN CHRISTIANS! When Rome Fell it had split between the east and west. The east adopted a more Orthodox version of Christianity and the west became the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
Having grown up with the bible pounded into me I began to see inconsistencies between what the written word of the bible vs. Jesus's own personal quotes. I have seen the bible used to meet any argument by selective interpretation and selective quotation. Jesus is quoted as saying "Salvation is through my word," and "Salvation is through me," in the bible. The second one is something a Church would write into their bible to make it seem like one must worship a particular entity. In reality salvation is in the words of Jesus. Not the man himself. Now the faith issue. Now for another Questions Christians get wrong, "ten commandments or two?" Jesus gave two commandments but Christians are under the impression they need to live by the ten. People worship Jesus but do they obey HIS commandments? Nope! The problem is that Jesus offered us a way of living that did not involve organization. His way is too simple for people to wrap their minds around. They feel like they need guidance to walk in the unknown (life which is the greatest unknown). Most humans are very much akin to sheep the way they need to fit in a group facing the unknown and the uncertain. The Christian church is a cult in every definition. Members must tithe, members must conform and not question the church, and it has a hierarchy that has a council, a leader, and a pantheon. Its beliefs are questionable, and it offers no proof to substantiate their views and opinions. Most people need religion to face the ultimate uncertainty of what becomes of us when we die. Churches make promises of an afterlife that cannot be substantiated. I have flat lined and I didn't see anything on the other side. Nothing. I blacked out and came too moments later and my heart rate hit ZERO. (BAD reaction to an allergy test.) Also we are all sinners until we are absolved by accepting the sacrifice of a man to wash us of our sin. That makes no logical sense at all! All Jesus said was live a good life and keep God in your heart. He never said we need a church and that the whole world I our church. I can see the beauty of his word but I see no need to worship him or accept him as my savior. I have saved myself from the lie of Christianity. I learned I don't need guidance to live or live a good life. As long as I can learn to walk in grace among my fellow man I will have achieved more than 99% of humanity ever has. That is something that may take me more than my lifetime to learn but at least I know what better is. And I don't need to pay for my salvation. |

Now for another Questions Christians get wrong, "ten commandments or two?" Jesus gave two commandments but Christians are under the impression they need to live by the ten. People worship Jesus but do they obey HIS commandments? Nope! All 10 commandments can be found in the teachings of Jesus. Members must tithe, members must conform and not question the church Not true. People aren't forced to tithe. It is all willingly done. And no member don't have to conform to any church, yes some churches teach this and some teach that, which is wrong on their part. But nevertheless no conforming necassary. You can either choose a specific church that teaches as you do, or confront the people of the church. If they do not listen, again that is wrong on their part. Christianity isn't entirely about "teaching". It is a life long learning process. He never said we need a church and that the whole world I our church Those sticks and stones that make up the building of the church means nothing. Church is where two or more men are gathered in the lord's name. Doesn't have to be in a building, know ye not, that your body is the temple of God and the holy spirit dwells inside of you? The building itself is not important, just makes it more convenient and comfortable. |

Tell that to Morningsong. She says that you cannot be 'spirit filled' until you are "born again.' I KNOW DIFFERENT. God is in me. |

Don't you know that the 600 commandments wouldn't work so well for a movie? Moses would have never gotten down the Mountain with all those slates. In fact, that's probably what happened. Moses said to God: "Flock this sheet!!" and threw them over a cliff. |
