To answer the question, I'll break it down a little.

Drugs/alcohol -- yeah, I've had many problems while dating people who used these. Some are now dead because of drugs and alcohol. Some are permanently damaged in other ways. I've made a decision that I will not get involved with anyone who uses either. And that's a serious delimiter, because there don't seem to be any non-drinkers on dating sites.

Kids -- just a personal deal-breaker. I will never be a parent and -- after numerous entanglements with single/divorced mothers -- I will not date one, either. Again, serious delimiter. There aren't any childfree women on dating sites, and if there are, they want to have a baby more than anything else in the world.

Stalkers -- A few. Mostly harmless. It seemed a lot more of an issue when I was involved in music. As yet, I haven't seen any "writer stalkers," although Stephen King's "Misery" certainly has a little something to say on the subject.

Back in 2005, when I was working on my first book, one of my exes suggested I move to a little town just south of Joliet, IL. Her assessment was based on the idea that "It's quiet and nobody will bother you."

She was right about that. After a few months, though, I asked her what people did in that town if they wanted to meet someone. She said "There are only two places to meet anybody here, a bar or a church." Neither of those was a suitable option for me.

In retrospect, I should not have moved there. I did finish the book, true enough, but I could have done that just about anywhere, really.

So even something as simple as deciding where to live can have enormous repercussions on your dating life....
