I just want to take a poll to see how people feel about this.
Do you consider someone speaking in a foreign language around you the same thing as whispering? Or at least just as bad/rude? I mean, either way, you don't know what they are saying... How would you feel about it if they were doing it in your own household right in front of you? |

If the people is in the same group you are with, then it would be a rude thing to do. Although, for some people they just sometimes forget they are doing that; and thinking they know you well, you would not mind if they slip on that once in a while.

If they were putting flowers in the bath they
had just drawn me, I would forgive them. |

If they were in my home, and in my presence I would ask that they speak my language if they know it. Otherwise its just rude.

What's funny is, the people who were doing it...they work in the activities department where I live. Both african americans from Texas. Who speak perfect English...I am convinced they are speaking some kind of made up language...They do it when they are calling bingo for us usually. We are constantly told that this place should be treated as our home. Sure as hell doesn't seem like it some days.
I confronted one of them about it and she said "well it was important and y'all weren't supposed to hear it." SO FREAKING WHAT? If it is that fricken important...take it outside!!! I think she was lying tho because they were both laughing. |

How would you feel about it if they were doing it in your own household right in front of you? happened to me my whole life. my mom and aunts speak german and i don't. every time they wanted to say something without the kids hearing it they'd speak german. as an adult i find it just rude. except when i was in germany. can't reasonably expect the whole country to speak english just because i was there. . . . |

Well I can't think of any reason why I would find someone in my home holding a conversation in a foriegn language. There are a few of Hispanic decent at work who sometimes speak in complete Spanish to one another. It doesn't offend me, as it seems to me that it is just easier for them to comunicate in thier native language. I have noticed that some cultures have things that are unique to them and there is no way to express it in English.

I could totally understand if I was at work or in a public place and it happened. In those situations I don't think it's any of my business. But when someone is intentionally making it obvious they don't want you to know something, it is really rude in my book.

We had a group of Japanese people working with us in the Post Office and the boss would tell them that they should speak English in the workplace because they have to know it to get a job with the P.O. so they can't claim they don't understand it. They got annoyed but finally stopped because it was proven that they were talking crap about other workers.
