What we now call "classical liberalism" (known as simply "liberalism" in its day) was quite rigidly defined. The word is derived from the latin "libre", meaning "liberty". There were (and are) slightly differing opinions among liberals (in the classical sense), but not nearly so much as in more modern schools of thought. (This is because the origins of liberalism are primarily in England and France) You will find similar opinions expressed by Bastiat, Locke, Jefferson, and Mises, for example. The primary differences come about with accumulated knowledge over time. For example, not many modern liberals accept Utilitarianism, but Locke did. |

Classical liberalism wasn't for the cliched types you mentioned at all. Have you even bothered to read any classical liberals? Ludwig Von Mises and his students carried the classical liberal tradition well into the 20th century, adapting it to the complexities of the time, and it's still practical today. (classical liberal ideas are still taught to this day in liberal arts schools and applied to modern situations) The only major difference is that "libertarian" has become the default label for them (and I count myself among their ranks) primarily because the word "liberal" was hijacked by statists in the 20th century. |

WTF? Classical liberalism wasn't for the cliched types you mentioned at all. Have you even bothered to read any classical liberals? Ludwig Von Mises and his students carried the classical liberal tradition well into the 20th century, I wouldn't be likely to read these philosophies. I didn't have to read Mein Kamph to understand why radical fascism has no place in a civilized world. I am not a disciple of classical Liberalism, so no. I would not be likely to study this philosophy. Basically, if you want to know what classical Liberalism is all about, you need only read about the opinions of Ayn Rand, Milton Friedman and the Chicago School of Economics. Another good reference would be Alan Greenspan, who had to admit after the crash of 2007 that his philosophy had been wrong. |
