Good article.

I'm sure Walter Cronkite wouldn't be able to say "And that's the way it was" today. Today's mantra would be "And that's how I see it."

Ted's right. I remember watching Walter tell it "as it was" when I was a child, laying with my grandfather on the floor. He had the volume turned up high, as he was hard of hearing. Grandpa was a hard line "Goldwater Republican," much like I am today. However, the news wasn't framed with a slant, you had to make up your own opinions instead of having them given to you. You were given facts which had to be thought about, now thinking is optional.

I guess it makes it easier for our political parties to do things we all deeply disagree with that way. When you aren't presented with facts, it's harder to take any real stand, for you have nothing to back your rhetoric with. Maybe it's a planned design, keep us fighting over scraps while the real pie is eaten by few. It just seems that the world was a better place when some things weren't run for a profit, it just allowed more freedom. But we're modern Americans, we really don't care about freedom any more. It's just another adjective, no longer a noun.

Ted Koppel one of the few fact based reporters left in America...and I agree whole heartedly with his article.....fact based hard hitting journalism is becoming extinct along with dinosaurs

It seems like the investigative part of the news is missing.... the war reporters just reported what they were told... the waco seizure, reporters were held a few miles, and agian, reporting what the police says...just about everything is a press conference now, no investigation work at all.

Here is BBC reporter Jane Standley broadcasting live from New York City on 9-11 explaining how and why WTC 7 fell 20 minutes before it collapsed with the building still standing visible behind her! When someone in "Central Control" realizes they are going out early with the "how and the why" before they have blown up WTC 7 then the BBC loses the signal from NYC five minutes before WTC 7 collapses completely and symmetrically into it's own footprint at free fall speed defying the laws of physics and displaying all the hallmarks of controlled demolition.

WELL here you have a real news story worthy of invetigation. In real time prior to its collapse a BBC reporter starts talking about the collapse of building 7 with the building still standing in the background. I am no Ted Kopel but if I were a journalist I would wish to interview this woman and ask her why or who had her make a broadcast about something before it happened. Hey to make it even more interesting when the powers that be realised they missed the timeing a bit the feed just goes dead, never has anyone bothered to look into it. These are mad mad times for sure.

The news has always been someone's take on what happened.

People in the old days just didn't question it.

No you were using my thread about journalists to yet again beat a dead horse.....and I am asking you kindly to keep your biased opinions out of my threads....there was no particular subject brought up....but the fact that extremist shows on MSNbC FOX and all of them are not bipartisan shows but extremists talk shows.......I feel I am being polite in my request......and would hope u would not bring any particular subject to prove any points with the exception to the fact that journalism is dead.....and creating facist extremists like you and your biased opinions for example......thanks

well, there is no doubt dragon is correct, if it comes thru a human mouth, it has the 'essence' of that persons view on it...

have views changed?

no doubt.

times have changed.

where there be more wealth and power hanging in the balance, views are more redily "bought", in this great capitolist self opportunist craze of modern days...

no doubt about that as well.

"Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."

"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius -- and a lot of courage -- to move in the opposite direction."

No they didn't.

They gave a homogenized "approved" version that had the journalists slant to the story.

That is what journalism is.

Well it was a lot closer to factual and less opinionated than today.............Yes the better reports and full stories were read over viewed it is a shortened version and therfore more cut out from the full story to condense but now just all opinion based as opposed to yersteryear.....I agree reading things and conprehending them on your own gives a larger scale factual based background of the truth.......yes everyone writes maybe to a slant but it wasn't an unadultered slant

I remember watching Chet and David and Walter and Eric and Peter and all the others during the Viet Nam war. They reported what they saw as they saw it. They also gave commentary on how they felt about it.
And by choosing what they reported on they also filtered the "news" in their own way, although they wouldn't admit it.
