13-year-old Cody Alicea rides with an American flag on the back of his bike. He says he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He's had the flag on his bike for two months but Monday, was told to take it down.

A school official at Denair Middle School told Cody some students had been complaining about the flag and it was no longer allowed on school property.


"In this country we're supposed to be free," said Cody. "And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they're telling me I can't." Cody had to take the flag off his bike and put it in his backpack, where he kept it all week.


Cody's grandfather says the school was concerned about racial tensions or uprisings because of the flag. He feels if there was really a problem it should have been brought up two months ago, not during Veterans week. And if it was an issue of safety, parents should have been contacted.

"No action should be taken. We don't want any repercussion," said Roger Alicea. "We just want Cody to be proud of what he's doing." Roger says the family is not planning to take any legal action, but they do want to meet with school staff.


Cody says he wants to serve in the military some day, and is raising money for a trip to Washington, D.C. in the Spring.


After being contacted by FOX40 Friday morning, Denair's Superintendent says Cody will be allowed to keep the flag on his bike. He told FOX40 he and the school are patriotic, but their main priority is keeping students safe; the school will focus on the students who are causing uprisings. Riding a bike is still not allowed on school campus, but when Cody rides his bike to school he can now fly the flag.

No but the concept that Americans should some how be ashamed to fly the flag of their own country is.The concept that someone is offended by our flag and we should take it down is nothing but a slap to our face and a disgrace to the millions dead who died for it.

Maybe you don't see it,but as someone well read in history of warfare and genocide I certianly do.This is how it starts...One person demands the American flag be removed for(insert reason here).Then some other school demands flag shirts,flag pins,flag what ever not be worn because someone is offended.Soon it bleeds into the Federal system.Government workers are not allowed to wear patrotic shirts or display American flags on their desks because someone from other country might be offended.Then the American flag must not be flown in certain parts of town,on certain Islamic holidays,in certain buildings,blah,blah,blah.

Pretty soon the American flag is nothing more than a piece of cloth to be found in musuems and flown over the capitol on the fourth of July.


The American flag is not just a piece of cloth.It is a symbol of the greatest country on earth.A country that has sacraficed millions of men and women fighting other peoples Wars so they can be free.It is a symbol of liberty,justice,freedom,life,and rebellion.No other country on earth has even come close to what the United states can brag about.Every day thousands of people risk their life from countries all over the World to live here.People would sell their souls and children to live here.

I say if you are offended by the flag then good!!!I hope you get pissed off,thrown a fit,whine,cry,and complain.Because it is amusing to watch you change something that will never be changed.Feel free to leave this country at any time.This is our country and our flag and you don't have the choice,rights,laws,or power to make us remove it regardless where we fly it.You may not like Americans or our flag.But don't you dare tell us we can't fly it.

Then in that situation shouldn't the school have looked into the complaint and investigated and them come to a fair conclusion?

No they just reacted to a complaint and made a hasty decisoin to make the boy remove the flag.

So your saying that every complaint should be acted on immediately and those who the complaint is against should have to stop. Then later we will investigate the complaint and make a decision.

I say we should leave it to the officials of the school to gauge the environment at THEIR school and do whats best for THAT environment,,,

The reason the flag is an issue is because if that flag is allowed all flags can be allowed. Then all personal signs of any kind of preference can be allowed.

No personal signs of anything are allowed at the schools to keep the sanity for the schools.

As long as he puts it away before entering the school grounds he is free to do what he wants.
