 I know I can come across as curt and condescending...mostly because I know Im smart and dont hide it if the other person isnt at my same level..however, I dont rub someones nose in it or am purposely offensive because I happen to be with an inferior being... yes, we Vulcans and Romulans must be patient with these humans they interpret scientific data as rudeness - more Romulan ale pmarco? indeed..and yes, thank you, Id enjoy another glass...  |

While keeping intelligence in mind, do you sacrifice the truth for the sake of people's feelings? Blunt honesty seems to get people butt-hurt. I truly value honesty, but why is it some people cant? I doubt you know, but if you do... ... Please, enlighten me.  People can be honest, yet not mean about it. If you have an issue with people getting upset with you for being honest, look at your approach. Perhaps it's the way you're being honest. |

Honestly, I take people based on their merit. No matter how people treat me, I judge by what they do, not just what they say. In essence, I try to understand the PERSON.
That being said, I live in one of the most uptight States in the USofA. Working in a service industry, I have to deal with this crap every day. People will twist your words around on you to get you fired from your job if they don't like you. I don't mean to be negative, but I've lived in Connecticut all my life. I have seen a change in the type of people that live here. I once had a friend who was raised in the South (I can't remember where, but along the Gulf), was career Navy and stationed in Connecticut. He told me after two years of knowing him, "CT is the worst State I've ever been as far as civil liberties go." Based on what I've seen, I believe him. I always was someone that could be counted on for blunt truth. Just to survive, I had to adapt. Now at my age, I'm getting tired of it. I want to be myself, not what others want me to be. Someone needs to correct Political Correctness.  Okay....now I'll go back into Clark Kent mode. |

Tact often is just a rephrasing of one's message. Think of a spin doctor - those guys hired by politicians to make something bad look good and vice versa. It's not candy-coating. Tact has a myriad of forms, each depending on the people involved. Real life example: My friend and I were watching something, and he said, "Why couldn't I find a girl like that in high school?" I responded, "Because she was looking for someone older....more experienced and more mature than a high school boy." His response: "Wow....I never thought of that, and you said it without hurting my feelings." Corny, but it really did happen verbatim. Blunt honesty does have a use though. Sometimes being tactful isn't enough, even when multiple people have used it multiple times to convey the same message to a single person. Each one probably approached the problem from a different angle and perspective, but each had the same message. In these cases, sometimes a person needs the shock of bluntness just to get them to open their eyes and process all the words of advice they've heard. Blunt honestly is a last resort, but if used properly, it is an effective one. In fact, the person may even thank you for it. It might take weeks, months, or even years, but when it has the proper impact - when it makes a positive difference - people often will remember it with gratitude. your post made me think too that, perception of rudeness can also be a matter of who you are with. I can be more up front with friends or clsoefamily members than people who I don't know very well. Even so my approach is generally to drive people like Andy over the edge by being nice

I laughed when I was told. "Yeah, I just aint no good at saying s**t that I dont mean to peoples face. But, you guys are really good at it!" I am forever doomed to middle mgmt. Want to put a bullet through the head of your love life? Shoot off a few honesty bullets. "I think your family is a freakshow and I detest having those inbreds intrude on every damned holiday" "No baby, you didn't lose 15 pounds.....they are right behind you. turn around...they are right there!" "Damn! That is one ugly kid you spawned! Shoulda thrown that one to the wolves" Wanna shed a few friends? Be honest.......... "Your old lady hits on me when you are passed out drunk" "Dang! thats just a "few" words, lol... are few words deemed as better than many words? such would indeed show a bias toward few words, over many words. well, lets see, the government that protect self and all life is governed by reems and reems of millions of pages of long data? is there a stated length that posts are required to be? i can meet any expectation of any law or bylaw, if allerted to such in advance. if not, then would any mortal be wise to accept a biased perception as wise? indeed, many words are good sometime, just as few words are good sometime, would be the only equal, so the only assessment not to have bias? if there is preference of one over the other, would this not most show the will to make other's suite the "self taste", therefore indicating but personal bias in the favor of self? are not winter and summer as equal to each other. hot and cold as equal to each other? harsh and kind then as equal to each other? long and short as both equal in value as well? hum... so, since bias is seen in the advice, i respectfully decline to accept such as "good advice", as some guide and basis for behaviour and action on at ALL TIMES. short, live by it? make sure not to travel too far... make sure not to make love for too long... really, such advice interpreted, means suite me, any my own personal bias, or else, your not as good as me, lol... indeed, many of my post are but a one sentence, so there is equal in the fashion that they are written, if one look past it's personal preference as the dictator of all other's. |
