What is the purpose of government?

Does the welfare of the many out weigh that of the few?

Or do the few deserve the peonage of the many?

Is the only purpose of industry to profit the
industrious at any cost?

Or is it to improve the standard of living for all?

Just a bump really. But I am surprised that none of you Ayn Rand, Carl Marx, cut and paste affectionados have anything of worth to say about some pretty basic social political questions.

governments were born out of the need for people to be able to live together and form societies..once Lords and Kings were given the boot humanity realized they still needed someone to be in charge...A social contract was formed whereby people agreed to follow rules...

what we have today is far from that ideal. Governments today serve capital and the marketplace..basically "we the people" have been left to our own devices.

The big government works like this today; usually a highly educated, high-income person (Democrat, Republican) runs for office against a similarly educated but quite a bit poorer person (Independent). Usually the Democrat or Republican recieve funding from a third-party company that they have partial ownership of to further push their candidacy for whatever government position they are seeking (George Bush Sr., Jr.), meanwhile the Independent party recieves funding mostly from fundraisers and donations (Dr. Ron Paul).

Ultimately the most money wins, as we are more a capitalism than we are even close to a democracy. We work more like a republic (think; Republic of the Congo) than we have anything in common with a democracy yet we still hold similarities to socialist countries with the huge rich-poor gap and lack of middle-class.

Throughout the last 40 years the middle-class has been shrinking more and more, leading to theories of the N.W.O. and other such nonsense (it is nonsense, just read about it). In the long-run the government wants to live in a nice big house, with a nice big yard, 12-car garage (which they park their BMW, Mercedes, and Bentley in) and still money left over to pay for whatever the hell it is that government spends money on (because it surely isn't the people, economy, or security).

I can really go a lot longer, but I would probably only bore you and cause an outcry from people on both sides of the fence.

So basically instead of a single despot to oppose we only have ourselves to blame?

Sort of...unfortunately it isn't quite that easy though, blame is across the country but it is split 50/50 between society and the government. We can't continue to blame the government, but we can't blame ourselves either...it is what I like to call "The Vicious Circle."

in an ideal world, government should simply be the top authority which GOVERNS a people towards health and prosperity

(like the eldest sibling)

but governments are made of humans and humans are far from ideal
