Voters now know a thing or two about Harry Reid's type -- the Senate majority leader, speaking at a fundraiser Monday, reportedly called New York
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand "the hottest member," in front of a crowd that included the blond mother of two.

Politico.com reported that the remark caused Gillibrand to blush and surprised those in the audience.

Reid apparently was explaining that senators are known for "many things," but that Gillibrand has a reputation as a Capitol Hill hottie.

"We in the Senate refer to Senator Gillibrand as the hottest member," he said, according to the article. Plus she knows securities law, he added.

It wasn't the first time Gillibrand's been the focus of a little legislative lusting. A Republican opponent once called her "attractive" during a debate, and the first-term senator is ranked at No. 3 on The Hill's list of the 50 "most beautiful" people on Capitol Hill.

Gillibrand spokesman Matt Canter said in an e-mail to FoxNews.com that Reid was actually referencing the Hill article when he made the remark.

"The leader was saying nice things about the work Senator Gillibrand and Senator Reid have done together over the last year and half, and made a joke referencing to the Hill article from earlier this year," he said. "Senator Gillibrand has the utmost respect for Senator Reid and looks forward to continue working together to repeal DADT, pass 9/11 health, and create good-paying jobs across the country."

But Democratic strategist Jehmu Greene said the comment was over the line and is the kind of remark that discourages women from getting into politics.

"Absolutely sexist. Absolutely not acceptable," she told Fox News.

Reid's been on a roll lately in the dishing-out-uncomfortable-compliments department. Last week he referred to Democratic Delaware Senate candidate Chris Coons as his "pet."

its all context, which people ignore in this day of the news snippet

ANY word or group of words can be used to demean,, in this context he obviously paired it with a positive reflection of her professional knowledge,,,making it kind of obviously a compliment

Actually with examples like these from our leaders.......how do they expect the younger generations to show repect to the female population......has it really gotten so far that a compliment to the opposite sex is constantly scrutinized.......for some reason the women dont seem offended but others seem to have to be nosey and become offended for them? WOW, I think in our society if a woman is offended she can speak for her self......guess not...what was I thinking?

Do you know one of the jobs the Loss Prevention people do are investigate claims for Human Resources as far as time theft and sexual harassment? I've had to suspend someone pending invesatigation for making a simular remark to another employee when I worked for Albertson's.

But I guess it makes it ok since he is a Democrat and a Senator.

He caught himself after he made the statement. It was like a "Oh by the way she is skilled at this too". So I guess because she's supposedly attractive it makes her a better Senator?

did you know through osmosis about the comment or was there a COMPLAINT filed?

'offensive' is entirely subjective

I didnt read where he drew that conclusion, as I said , if SHE wasnt offended than it should be taken as the compliment it was intended as,,,he isnt the first politician to speak at an event and make a comment about something personal in anothers life,, like how they dress, or how they play golf,,,etc,,

its called 'lightening' the mood,, it doesnt have to be ALL political all the time so long as that is the main theme

A complaint was filed by the victim OR az witness. Harry Reid now has millions of witnesses.

so a WITNESS can complain about someone offending ME if I havent said I was offended? interesting

my mom managed thousands and never heard of that either,,,,

sounds like extreme pc nonsense to me

I can decide if I feel complimented or not, its noone elses business to decide for me

whats to stop jane from running to HR because the guy she liked calls me beautiful on the job? seems like that type of policy would unnecesarily tie up the HR departments
