You want to get promoted quick at DQ? Well, just work your *** off and show them you care about what you are doing and you just might.

My advice on paying for college? Scholarships...and more scholarships. Their is a ton of free money out there. That is the way to go.

Funny, a lot of people I know got training in the military as well as college time as well. You need to talk to your recruiter about what you are looking at for college. If it is a skill needed by the military you not only can get college seat time while in the military but you can also get "Internship" time as well. Having a job in the mean time is nice but why are you not getting some of your pregraduate work out of the way at a community college? Units are transferable.

You didn't do a lot of homework on your objectives have you?

Have you even scheduled a sit down with a college education councilor?

The military also has programs that allow you to spend time in college BEFORE entering the military but you need to get through boot camp first. You will be on base during the summer though.

You are not just assuming you want to go to college without having an idea of what you want to train for first have you?

There is a learning curve with any new job. I think most employers realize that. You seem to have a nice disposition, and a nice smile. I'm sure you will do fine. I'd say, just relax, learn all you can, be on time for work and keep smiling. Best of luck!

You've got this site all wrong... A lot of it has to do with timing in the forums. Anyway... You're on delayed entry, so you have a few different ways to up your rank/paygrade before you ship out. If you've done ROTC... That will up you a rank. If you can get a friend recruited, and signed up... That will up your rank. There is a physical test you can take before hand where if you pass it will up your rank before you even ship out. You could potentially ship out as an E-4. Does that answer your question well enough? Yes you're cute... But I don't care about sex as an incentive.

Don't you have to BE in college to get into the ROTC? Also you have to consider that if you join as an "officer candidate" and you muster in as an officer there is no such thing as retirement. If you plan on a career in the military I say go ahead full steam with ROTC. Also knowing what the military WANTS can help you advance pretty fast too.

Just a friendly word of caution, don't bite off more than you can chew. The higher up the food chain you go the more responsibility you will bear. Command has its issues you will learn in the politics of the military. Meeting Performance Expectations is one of them and when you have several tasks on your plate and a bunch of people not doing their jobs right or not at all, well, motivating them to get it right can be a chore.

Also when you get in and are doing Boot Camp DO NOT SMILE AT THE D.I.. You will get yelled at at length. So many of my friends told me what BC was like for them. For the first two weeks you get yelled at a lot.

Now officer training... That is some fun stuff there! Fashion Sense for the Military... SORT OF but there is also discipline training, etiquette and is way different from boot camp.

Many people I knew over the years prospered in the military so here is to you...

You really need to speak with an Education Councilor at your local community college. They are free but you have to schedule an appointment.

It helps to have an idea what you want when you speak with your recruiter.

Now if you have an issue with Authority like I do the Military might not be for you. Part of the reason they are so hard on recruits for the first two weeks is because you have to handle stressful situations. Say for instance you are the Engineer (the third person in the cockpit) of a KC 135 Air Tanker and one of the engines on your aircraft...

...goes bang and suddenly little red lights are erupting on your instrument panel. Most people would panic and freeze up. the reactions of the engineer can very well make the difference whether or not the plane makes it back to the base or not. When things go to hell it is nice not having the personnel running around like idiots compounding a bad situation to worst.

One consolation for all the yelling and posturing, you get to play with cool weapons! Semi Automatic is no where near as fun as going full rock and roll!

since the guys have taken off on the military side i will give you advice for your local dq. always be on time with your hair and makeup and uniform neat and clean. smile and be friendly to everyone...customers and employees. do as much sidework as you can in down time at work. be a go to person....if someone calls in sick and you have three days off...cover their shift for them. tell your manager you want to move up. maybe eventually get a restaurant job after you have some experience under your belt as a bartender or server where you can at least make tips that will help you make more money than just minimum wage. train yourself to be proactive in situations. that will come in handy later in life.
good luck with getting into the military!

Sorry, I had to laugh when you said "DQ".. I worked at the DQ for 10 yrs and loved it !! Not the best place to look for promotions though...lol As for the military... the best advice I can give you is to keep your mouth shut in boot camp.. My youngest daughter was in the Navy for 12 yr and she said the that was the hardest thing she had to do.. She's very independent and doesn't take crap from any guy...lol
BTW.. She just graduated college at the age of 44 and will be working for the VA..

Generally speaking in the military; especially boot camps, it is not about knowing what you need to know before.

But it is about being totally GI, making it through training, which means leaving everything else out. Bottom line the military will not care about any goal you have for sleep, money, rank, college, social life , travel, or anything else regardless of what the recruiter tells you. The Drill Instructor's mission is to train the trainable and wash-out the untrainable. He is not your friend, coach, confidant, or parent. He could careless about your rights.

Once you are there it is about shutting up, focusing on exactly what you are told to do ( not improvising and no need for suggestions) and assessing results and reporting them consisely when told to. When told to do something doing it absolutely without hesitation; on time. Even if something is easy for you giving maximum effort, and sometimes thensome, is expected. It is not about being popular, even though loyalty and honorable behavior are essential. It is about following regulations and mastery of basic military skills. It is not only about survival it is about completion of the mission.

If you want to prepare then practice your listening skills, stop smoking, drinking, eating junk, and start working out or at least running without tunes, a cell phone, and TV every day in any kind of environment. Getting used to memorizeing things, taking good notes, and taking tests is useful. You will do a lot of reading and have to retain it. A GED Center can help you develpe your study skills pre-bootcamp.

Developeing good posture, maintaining your hygiene throughly and quickly, being meticulous about your appearance, and getting used to short hair without product is helpful especially if you are used to the longer hair. Being used to eating what you are served (quickly), drinking water, and keeping personal things picked up helps if it is habitual.

No Crying, whineing, pouting, tattleing, making excuses, or needing to know why. You can't get over or slide by. No oops, do overs, or trying again.

Having a professional, considerate, can do attitude is required.

By the way this works at Dairy Queen too and life in general.

P.S. Good Luck And as Harsh as it sounds it is and absolute hoot, doable, and can really give you a great leg up on life.

I forget who said it but the comments about rank and politics are spot on.
