I watched a little of it but it was 'dry' which is typical of older BBC shows. It was very cerebral which I did approve of a lot. The plots were tight. The acting was very good which also was a hallmark of old BBC TV.

Now what was with his tiny Mustache? He had the tiny handlebars going on for sure!

He was a French (Belgian??? I was not exactly sure of his exact heritage...) Sherlock Holmes.

Although it wasn't my cup of tea exactly it was a good show and I did watch it from time to time and I am not a fan of Agatha Christie.

I am not sure if your tastes in Detective also embrace Noir which some was a little "Period" and by today's standards would come off as Camp but a lot of it had a sultry class to it where BBC tended to be a thinker's show. Americans have a hard time paying attention unless there is a lot of flashing lights and gun shots every ten minuets. I only remember seeing a gun in the Poirot series only twice and once it was a murder weapon he found hidden and the other was wielded by the villain. Detective thrillers these days have at least one gun battle every episode. Like that is real life? BBC was closer to real life than Hollywood!

If you need something different try Noir meets Lovecraft and look up a movie called "Cast a Deadly Spell" if you need some detective thrills of an otherworldly nature.

David Suchet was excellent in the series. Peter Ustinov played him several times on film. My personal favorite is Albert Finney as the Belgian detective in the 1974 quintessential adaptation of Murder On The Orient Express(which was the first Agatha Christie novel I read).

Oddest casting was when Tony Randall played him in The Alphabet Murders.

And he was hilariously spoofed in the 70's comedy Murder By Death- James Coco as Milo Perrier.

He was Belgian and he was constantly correcting those who called him French.

Hastings: Oh really? Personally I always feel perfectly safe with British railways. Mind you its very different in France, isn't it?

Hercule Poirot: I wouldn't know. I am not French, I am Belgian.

Hastings: Well it's the same thing, you both eat horse meat.

It's old as far as being on since 1989, but the series still going strong. David Suchet says he hopes to play the character until he retires.

Indeed Hercule hates being called 'French' and he appears to be
the class act it seames to be a habbit of this when he is upset he will puff out his cheeks and turn away or look after them.
He'll only shout when he knows they are lying.

You could say he is a bit Over the top.

" Madomsell alow me to introduce myself I am Hercult Poirot!"

Ahh, love him... I like David Suchet's portrayal of the character. drinker

Yeah "over-the-top" might do well to describe him... a bit of a fop, flamboyant, a dandy... even ego-centric. But I think he balences all that with charm and wit and kindness and sense-of-duty... and of course his skills.

I did not know that about him being in a Sherlock Holmes story... do you remember which one??

It's not based on any of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's books, it just uses the characters.
