I read the vegas odds, and I know what the point spread is, just not the over/under.

The over-under is a type of bet for which the bookmaker attempts to predict an exact sport statistic for a given game and the bettors would then in turn try to guess whether the statistic would be higher (over) or lower (under) than the sportsbook's prediction.

Example...let's say the Cowboys are playing the Rams. The over/under is 43.

The 43 is the total points in the game scored by both teams combined. If you bet over, then you think both teams combined will score over 43 total points. If you bet under, you will think the teams will score under 43 points combined. It doesn't matter which team wins...only the total combined points in the game is considered.

If you bet over and the score is 24-21, the total combined points is 45 so you win your bet. If the score was 16-10 you would lose if you bet over. 22-21 would be 43 points and a push.

A lot of times the bookmaker will add a half point called a hook to make sure no push can occur. For instance the over/under could be 43.5 total points.

Do me a favor captain, don't bet on preseason games. Wait til the regular season and see injury reports.

Any bookmaker -legal or otherwise- would be a fool to take bets on preseason games; and any bettor would be just as foolish to bet on them.
