Atlanta, Georgia (CNN) -- The NAACP has retracted its original statement condemning comments made by a former Agriculture Department official who resigned after a video clip surfaced of her discussing a white farmer.

The NAACP said in a statement Tuesday that it was "snookered by Fox News" and conservative website publisher Andrew Breitbart.

"Having reviewed the full tape by Shirley Sherrod, who is the woman who was fired by the Department of Agriculture, and most importantly heard the testimony of the white farmers mentioned in this story, we now believe that the organization that edited the documents did so with the intention of deceiving millions of Americans," the statement from NAACP President Benjamin Jealous said.

Jealous later posted on his Twitter account that he "Spoke to Ms. Sherrod earlier today and personally apologized. Plan to meet with her face-to-face the next time I'm in Georgia."

The organization also urged Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to reconsider Sherrod's resignation from her post as the department's director of rural development for Georgia.

Breitbart originally posted the video, which was quickly picked up by Fox News.

In the video, Sherrod can be heard telling an audience at a March 27, 2010, appearance before a local chapter of the NAACP that she had not given a white farmer "the full force of what I could do" to help him save the family farm.

Sounds to me like they are merely pointing the finger at Fox while trying to deflect responsibility for their racist views.

credibility is very subjective,, Many dont find Fox credible, others dont find msm credible, others dont find the tea party credible, etc,,,

NAACP is still credible enough to put the spotlight on issues of injustice,,,

naacp are a bunch of blowhards down for the black cause, I see no difference between them and la raza or the kkk. They are not about equality for everyone. Some people are created equal and some are created more equal! That's not just the naacp but the mentality of all racist organizations.

the NAACP does not promote such nonsense that anyone is more equal,, I suggest (as usual) that people research more for themselves and listen to less propoganda

Here I am, a MEMBER of NAACP, explaining some of its core values and objectives in this thread, and still people who have NEVER been to a meeting and probably not READ the history or the current issues choose to go off of the usual rhetoric instead.....pretty amazing

comparing it to KKK or LA Raza...seriously,, I havent seen anyone from NAACP promoting or organizing cross burnings or hangings or shootings and I have been a member since GRADE SCHOOL.

I have been a lifelong member, most members I know arent much different than me,,,,,,I dont feel anyone should be more equal than anyone else(although the history of this country shows that people ARE) and would like to see more EQUALITY in many areas that arent currently reflecting it. I care about all people, but that doesnt mean I overlook injustice or inequality. I care about injustice and inequality, but that doesnt mean I dont care about white folks or would be happy if they were all dead,,,,,,these threads sometimes have so much nonsense, I wonder how old the posters REALLY are or how many places they have actually gone to, or how many cultures they have actually been exposed to with any significance...

1. Breibart and Fox News knew exactly what they were doing when they posted the EDITED version of that speech. And sadly they accomplished their goal. Shame on anyone (including the NAACP) for believing anything that Fox News reports...if you can call what they do reportingfrustrated .

2. Comparing the NAACP to the KKK is laughable laugh laugh laugh.
Your ignorance is on full displaywhat. Organizations like the NAACP would not be necessary if it weren't for the crippling racism and injustice this country was built upon and is still struggling with today.

3. People please think before you speak/act and stop allowing your deep seeded hatred for people to block your common sense...then again if a person is misguided enough to be a racist then common sense probably doesn't come into play often whoa slaphead

well, just remember, it was a racist statement/act that started this whole thing... she admitted to her mistake, and that's a great thing, but don't be thinking that white people have a monopoly on racism. it comes in all colors, shapes, and styles.
