What did Saul do and was this ok? Shalom..Miles

1 Sam 31:4-6

4 Then Saul said to his armorbearer, "Draw your sword , and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised men come and thrust me through and abuse me."

But his armorbearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took a sword and fell on it. 5 And when his armorbearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword , and died with him. 6 So Saul, his three sons, his armorbearer, and all his men died together that same day.

Everyone dies. Not everyone truly lives. When life is no longer more pleasurable than painful, I have no problem with checking out, so to speak.

What I've never understood is why don't all true believers smoke 10 pks a day and skydive alot? Oh sure, most religions have certain tenants against an act of suicide, but death by accident or disease is perfectly acceptable. If true believers really believe paradise awaits their final breath on Earth, why aren't they in more of a hurry to get there?

A dream I had last night brought to light a perplexing question. I figured I'd throw it out here and see what y'all think...

If you received news from a doctor that you had a lethal condition that could be fixed with a simple surgery and you refused to have the surgery, would this be considered suicide in the eyes of man and/or God? Is it the same thing as putting a bullet in your brain or is it different?

I believe it is different. Taking an act for the PURPOSE of ending ones life would be suicide. If you dont wish to have your health intervened with, and choose to put your life in Gods hands instead, I think that falls reasonably under a personal choice based in values...

if god allowed the sickness in the first place, than it is his will...but he also says we are allowed to make our own choices, so i would say no, it is not suicide. but i would have the surgery anyway, because god will take you if he wants you, surgery or not.

I'm not exactly sure where I stand on this, which is why I asked.

When I first woke up, my reaction was it's the same thing as blowing your brains out.

But then after thinking about it, I changed my mind. People smoke and know it's killing them slowly, but it's not considered suicide just because you don't choose to quit.

This scenario is similar, I suppose, just in a shorter time frame. You're choosing not to do something that could prevent your untimely death. This, I think, would technically give you a leg to stand on if you got to the pearly gates and God was standing there saying "NO admittance for you my daughter(or son), suicide victims can't come in. You should have done the surgery!"

Of course, this assumes there's a God, there are pearly gates, and that suicide would prevent admittance, none of which I'm sure I believe. I just thought it was an interesting dilemna.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

if god is alknowing, there is no such thing as an untimely death... it would have been his plan all along

The idea that life is "Sacred" is truly an insane idea for anyone who truly believes in a spiritual existence...
That is so profoundly true I just had to quote it.

I see so many people who profess a belief in the basic spiritual nature of life, but then turn around and talk about how "precious" life is. But if life is basically spiritual in nature, then it is, by definition, immortal and eternal.

(Note: I left out the last phrase in the quoted sentence because it seems to imply that spiritual existence somehow starts when the body dies and stops when a new body is (entered/assumed/taken over/whetever). Personally, I believe the spiritual existence is permanent and eternal and bodies are transient. For comparison: a player does not disappear when a game is over and reappear when a new game starts. It is the game that disappears and then reappears.)
