Seriously think bout it... What if I posed as A doctor and then lie and told you that you had one day to live? Sure, that's a REALLY BAD joke to play on anyone, but just think of all the good things you would do in that one day.

Or, we can use a traditional scene... You know damn well that if you tell the truth and say she does look a little fat in that dress that you might as well go put your PJ's on, because the night is OVER in more ways than one.

lol,, no its not ok. You may give someone a heart attack or motivate them to do something very foolish to someone else if they think they will be dying in a day anyhow. AS to the second scenario,, its really not difficult,, its simple to answer the question without being dishonest OR offensive ' I think you look curvy' ,,,or 'you are adorable' or 'you look comfortable',,,,,

WOW msharmony, you can stroke my ego any day. I know there are some people out there just waiting for any excuse. "If I'm dying, this whole bus is coming with me!" type of stuff, but I believe most would do things to make sure their family is taken care of.

lying is part of life. it would be a lie to say i've never lied and it would be stupid to think you do not lie to yourself and even to your loved ones or to strangers.

That being said... I personally believe that it is good to be honest about Most Things. Okay so why did I say "Most Things"? Read on.

Being discrete is important too. Your pretty ignorant if you think you can't hide something, its not considered good form to tell everyone everything, parents hide things from there kids (for example) they aren't going to blab about how good it was in bed last night to there 7 year old kids. And in fact that may be inappropriate for adults in the majority of settings as well. And simply put some things are not really anyones business except your own.

Although some people are going to interpret hiding something as not a lie, I interpret it as if your not going to tell people about it your hiding it which means your lying about it avoiding the conversation or leaving out details about the event which I consider lying/hiding.

What is important to take from this is yes hide things or lie if you need to. when its appropriate! Otherwise if your lying about things that should not matter anyways your distorting your reality and hurting yourself and others.

Maybe this wasn't the answer most of you wanted that is fine by me. I might love to live in a world without lies it would be hard to tell though because all i've known so far is this world and there are lots of lies in it.

I am interested to know what others think on this.

I have always considered lying as 'making a statemeent one knows is untrue'

so, for me, lying involves action and not inaction. If one is chosing which conversation to have or not have,, they are just using discretion(in my opinion.). But if one CHOOSES to have a conversation in which they INTENTIONALLY speak untruths,,they are lying. I think its natural for us to lie as children and adolescents when we are testing our boundaries, but I find less legitimate excuse for or use of lies once we become 'adults'.

Anyways, msharmony, you are soo right about the kid thing. I have no idea where my 8yr old nephew learned to lie, it's like instinct or something.

I try to live by an old Mark Twain saying, "If I never lied, I'd never have to remember anything." Which means if it's true then it's memory and you wouldn't have to think about it, unless your like 90 or something.
