My sister wants to give my nephew a drug test at home (long story)
My nephew says it might show positive because he has been around people smoking pot, but not smoking it himself.

Does the test pick up 2nd hand smoke?

Only a really sensitive test. The thing is I would not worry too much about pot. Meth, heroin, and cocaine? Those I would worry about!

PS, the best way to know is to catch him in the act! Let him try to say he was not smoking when he has a hooter to his lips!

he was caught in the act and got in trouble with the school. his parents want to make sure he straightens up

Are the home tests sensitive?

Home tests are very unreliable. I think that is wrong on many levels....smokin

"My nephew says it might show positive"

Any kid that says it might show positive...

Is getting high...

Trust me...

I told my mom the same exact thing when I was about 15.

I smoked a ton of pot in junior high, and the only thing it led to was Doritos...

I worked in a substance abuse clinic for a couple of years and per the lab we used they stated the "second hand smoke" does not show positive. In that sense if it came up positive it means the person who peed in the cup is the person smoking the weed.

If it were a lab quality test and it came back positive it would be sent for a confirmation in which it would get the level of THC in the system---lower the level the less in the system.

We would watch the levels because obviously without use they should go down.

I'm pretty sure he is smoking. I don't care what adults do, but when my 16 yr old nephew is getting busted before, there is a problem. My sister is bed ridden with a blood disease and doesn't need the stress of the law or the school on her.

My nephew is the king of lies. And he will deny it until he is blue in the face unless there is proof.

This is why I'm asking about the test.

He is hanging out with a 21 yr old guy (really loser anyway) The 21 yr old hangs out with 15-16 yr old kids. All of them have started smoking pot and trying other things.

It's more complicated than what I have explained here. There are bigger issues with this. It's not just a kid experimenting

Here is how you deal with it then. Report the 21 year old. He is contributing to the delinquency of minors. If Texas law catches him smoking you know what with minors well then the fun begins. Your nephew gets to deal with the system and that should straighten his *** out especially if he is caught out of the blue. That 21 year old looser? If I remember Texas law properly possession of Pot (Zero Tolerance state) can get him up to five years. Now contributing to the delinquency of Minors? Add another five. If he is caught within 500 yards of a school add another 2 years AND also dealing charges might apply and that adds another 2 to four years.

Your nephew can get by on Diversion but he will have to face probation AND real drug tests.

That will be the only way he will learn to behave instead of acting like such a Chump!

newark...it's not that easy. The blood disease my sister has is hereditary. I have it too. We react different to things than others.

It's much deeper than just a kid smoking pot

With your nephew stating the drug test "might" be positive because he was "around" people smoking---he is smoking.

You know this. Your sister knows this. Your nephew knows this.

What is a positive result on a home test going to prove?

I know that you are concernd--I would be too.

I guess what I am asking is you state your nephew lies---and lies well. So if it comes up positive he is not going to admit he smoked. C'mon--he is a teenager.

A home test will show if there is any detected in the system. To monitor to see if use is decreasing you would have to go to a substance abuse clinic (for adolescents), doctor office, or the emergency room. At least those were the options we gave a concerned parent. You would have to ask for a urine with confirmation.

Another option would be to research online for a lab company that would possibly offer this service through the mail.

Good luck.

basically what I want to know is if it is true that 2nd hand can be picked up on the tests. If not, then that is solid evidence that he can't get around.

My sister can't handle getting upset. It sends her into attacks. So her husband wants to make sure that it is solid first.

Make sense?

thank you for your wisdom MTflowerforyou

Oh...and thank you to all that replied too flowerforyou
